Calabria recorded 8,143,9701 overnight stays in 2024, 1.75%1 of Italy's 466,158,0452, and the nights arrive in one season: in 2026 Tropea declared 109,5524 of them in July and 1,6194 in January.
8,143,970 nights across 404 comuni
Calabria's accommodation logged 8,143,9701 nights in 2024, a 1.75%1 share of the national total. The region had 1,827,5713 residents on January 1, 2026, in 4043 comuni, and the largest of them, Reggio di Calabria, has 167,9253.
Over a full year that is under four and a half tourist nights per resident, a low ratio. It hides how unevenly the nights fall, and the regional series used here has no monthly breakdown, so a single town has to show the pattern.
Tropea: 109,552 nights in July, 1,619 in January
Tropea's tourist-tax declarations for January to July 2026 add up to 315,5094 nights, and 109,5524 of them were in July. January had 1,6194, which is 1.5% of the July figure.
The climb in between is steep: 2,7034 in February, 4,9884 in March, 25,1784 in April, 71,6144 in May and 97,6814 in June. August hadn't been declared yet when the report was updated on August 24, 2026.
These are nights declared for the tax, not an ISTAT count. They leave out residents and any property that didn't file, so they undercount the total and describe the shape of the season well. The town's own story is in Tropea lives in seven months.
The Strait airport shows the same curve
Reggio Calabria's Strait airport handled 567,8985 passengers from January to July 2026, and 95,8505 of them in July, about a sixth of seven months in a single one.
Lamezia Terme, the larger of the two, passed 1.965 million passengers over the same seven months. Both are running totals for 2026, not annual figures, and a full-year 2025 total couldn't be verified on the statistics pages.
2024 is the reference year
The ISTAT figure stops at 2024 on purpose. In 2025 the accommodation survey started counting non-professional rentals, so a 2025 regional total will rise partly because more beds entered the count.
Tropea's tax data is a separate source and doesn't carry that break, but it covers one comune on one stretch of coast.
When Calabria has room
On Tropea's declared figures, January to March 2026 were the quietest months, at 1,6194, 2,7034 and 4,9884 nights. April reached 25,1784, still about a quarter of July, and by May the town was at 71,6144.
If you want the coast without the July density, April is the shoulder the numbers point to. The interior has no comparable monthly series here, so no month is recommended for it.
