Molise: 456,284 nights in 2024, 0.10% of Italy

Molise recorded 456,284 overnight stays in 2024, 0.10% of the 466,158,045 counted across Italy and the smallest share of any region, which is fewer than two tourist nights a year per resident.

0.10%, the bottom of the ranking

Of the 466,158,045 nights spent in Italian accommodation in 2024, 456,284 were in Molise. No region recorded fewer, and the full order is in regions by overnight stays.

The population is small too: 285,940 residents on January 1, 2026, second from bottom, above Valle d'Aosta at 122,554 and below Basilicata at 525,281. Even against that population the tourist count is light, at fewer than two nights per resident per year.

136 comuni to share the nights

Molise's 136 comuni sit in only two provinces, Campobasso and Isernia, and the average comune had about 2,100 residents in 2026.

Spread evenly over the year and over those comuni, 456,284 nights would give each of them fewer than ten tourist nights per night of the year. They aren't spread evenly, but the order of magnitude is the point.

The sites the state runs

The state manages 12 cultural sites in Molise, in only eight comuni: Campobasso, Castel San Vincenzo, Civitacampomarano, Gambatesa, Isernia, Pietrabbondante, Sepino and Venafro. Campobasso, Isernia, Sepino and Venafro have two each.

Altilia-Saepinum, the Roman town at Sepino, is open every day from 8:15 am to 7:15 pm (8:15 to 19:15 on the sign). Since March 1, 2026 entry has been temporarily free because of works in progress; the ordinary price is €10, or €2 for ages 18 to 25.

The free period ends with the works, so check before you go. More on the site under Saepinum.

A region since 1963

Molise became Italy's twentieth region under constitutional law 3 of December 27, 1963, splitting from Abruzzi e Molise; the law took effect on January 19, 1964.

That makes it the most recent region in the country. A long series that reaches back before 1964 files its comuni under the old joint region, which is worth remembering when you set an old guidebook next to new statistics.

2024 and the new survey

ISTAT's 2025 survey adds non-professional rentals to the count, which will make Molise's next total larger partly for reasons unrelated to visitors.

On a base of 456,284 nights, even a modest number of newly counted rentals would move the share, which is one more reason to hold the comparison at 2024.

What the number means for a trip

At 0.10% of national nights, Molise gives you no reason to plan around crowds. What needs checking instead is whether a site, a bus or a train runs on the day you want it.

FAQ

Is Molise the least visited region in Italy?

Yes, by overnight stays. It recorded 456,284 in 2024, 0.10% of Italy's 466,158,045 and the smallest share of any of the 21 statistical regions. With 285,940 residents, that is fewer than two tourist nights per resident a year.

Which state museums and sites are in Molise?

The state runs 12 cultural sites there, in eight comuni: Campobasso, Castel San Vincenzo, Civitacampomarano, Gambatesa, Isernia, Pietrabbondante, Sepino and Venafro. They include the Italic sanctuary at Pietrabbondante, the monumental complex of San Vincenzo al Volturno and the Roman town of Altilia-Saepinum.

Why do older statistics count Molise inside Abruzzo?

Because Molise didn't exist as a region until constitutional law 3 of December 27, 1963 split it from Abruzzi e Molise, in force from January 19, 1964. Any series older than that files its comuni under the joint region, so check the date before comparing.

Does Molise get crowded in August?

The data can't say for a single month: the series used here gives 456,284 nights for the whole of 2024, with no monthly breakdown. Spread over the year and over 136 comuni, that averages fewer than ten tourist nights per comune per night.
