Seven days in Calabria and Basilicata

Seven days and four bases along the Tyrrhenian coast, the Pollino and Matera, planned around the fact that Tropea recorded 109,552¹ declared overnight stays in July 2026 and 1,619¹ in January.

The seasonality that should choose your month

Tropea declared 315,509¹ overnight stays for tourist tax in the first seven months of 2026, and 109,552¹ of them fell in July alone against 1,619¹ in January, which is 1.5% of the peak month.

The monthly run reads 1,619¹ in January, 2,703¹ in February, 4,988¹ in March, 25,178¹ in April, 71,614¹ in May, 97,681¹ in June, 109,552¹ in July. May and June are already three quarters of a summer.

These are declared stays, not the regional observatory count, so they understate the total. As a measure of when the town is full they are the best figure published.

Days 1 and 2: Tropea, on a rock 60 meters up

Tropea's old town sits on a cliff roughly 60 m above the Tyrrhenian, on the Costa degli Dei in the province of Vibo Valentia, and 5,668² people live there on the ISTAT estimate for January 1, 2026.

That last number matters more than it looks. A town of 5,668² residents that handles 109,552¹ overnight stays in July is running at many times its own size, and the same town in February runs at its real one.

Arrive at Lamezia Terme, IATA code SUF, which handled 3,049,594⁹ passengers in 2025, up 12.4%⁹ on the year before. It is the only Calabrian airport at that scale.

Day 3: Reggio Calabria, and the bronzes

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm with last entry at 7:30 pm and closes on Mondays, at €10 full, €2 for EU visitors aged 18 to 25 and free under 18. Rates have been in force since July 1, 2024 and were confirmed in September 2026.

There is a €5 evening ticket from 6:00 pm to closing, a €5 exhibition ticket, and annual passes at €22, €40 for a family and €5 for ages 18 to 25.

Inland from here the Aspromonte has been a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2021: 64,541³ hectares at the southern tip of the peninsula, 256,087³ residents, Palaeozoic metamorphic rock formed between 540³ and 250³ million years ago, and roughly a thousand speakers of the old Greek dialect of Calabria.

Days 4 and 5: the Pollino, second by surface

The Pollino national park was created in 1993 and covers 171,132⁵ hectares across Basilicata and Calabria, which makes it the second largest Italian national park on ministry figures, behind Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni at 178,172⁵ hectares. The park authority sits at Rotonda, in the province of Potenza.

The phrase "largest national park in Italy" is common and does not survive the official source, which is why it is not on this page. The 192,565⁵ hectare figure that supports it comes from a site that states it is not the park's own.

From here the Dolomiti Lucane are reachable for the Volo dell'Angelo, a cable ride between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa: the San Martino line is 1,415⁶ m with 118⁶ m of drop and speeds to 110 km⁶/h, the Peschiere line 1,452⁶ m with 130⁶ m of drop and speeds to 120 km⁶/h. It runs May to November, booking only online in advance, with a weight range of 35 to 120 kg⁶ and a minimum height of 135 cm⁶. The 2026 fare is not published on a readable page.

Days 6 and 7: Matera, and the only railway that reaches it

The only railway that reaches Matera is the narrow gauge network of the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane. The 2024 to 2033 contract between the Basilicata region and FAL sets the direct Bari to Matera run at 1 hour 25 minutes against a previous 1 hour 42, funds 5 new battery trains for the Matera metropolitan service and schedules a Sunday service from September 2026.

That 1 hour 25 is a contractual target announced in December 2023, not a timetable we have seen operated, and the line takes planned closures: the Bari Centrale to Grumo Appula section reopened on August 31, 2026 after summer maintenance with replacement buses until August 30.

The Sassi and the rock church park have been World Heritage since 1993 under criteria (iii), (iv) and (v), across a core zone of 1,016⁸ hectares and a buffer zone of 4,365⁸. Two nights is the minimum here, because the Sassi are a set of staircases and the light changes everything.
