1,740 museums stand where the people left

1,740¹ of Italy's 4,416¹ museums and similar institutions, 39.4%¹ of the total, stand in comuni classified as Inner Areas, in the 2022 ISTAT count.

What the 4,416 actually counts

The 4,416¹ figure covers museums and similar institutions open to the public: 3,392² museums, galleries and collections, 726² monuments or monumental complexes, and 298² archaeological areas or parks, at the 2022 reference year.

It is much wider than the list most visitors have in mind. The culture ministry runs 453² state institutes; everything else in the count is civic, ecclesiastical, university or private, which is why the total dwarfs the state list.

This is the most recent published census. The following cycle, with 2025 as its reference year, was still being collected in mid 2026, so 2022 is the year to quote until it lands.

39.4% of them are where the population is thinning

1,740¹ of those institutions are in comuni classified as Inner Areas, the official grouping built on how far a comune sits from the nearest hub of essential services. That is 39.4%¹ of the country's museums in the part of the country that is losing residents.

The two maps were drawn by different processes and they match anyway. Collections accumulated where wealth and clergy and local pride once were, and the services that keep a population followed a different geography entirely, later.

For a visitor the consequence is mechanical rather than sentimental: two museums out of five in this count are not reachable by the transport that brought you to the city you are staying in.

Molise is the extreme case: 12 sites, eight comuni

The state runs 12 cultural sites in Molise, spread across eight comuni: Campobasso, Castel San Vincenzo, Civitacampomarano, Gambatesa, Isernia, Pietrabbondante, Sepino and Venafro. Four of those towns hold two institutes each.

That is a complete regional inventory you can read in one sitting, which almost no other Italian region allows. It includes an archaeological museum, a Samnite sanctuary, two castles, a Paleolithic museum and a Roman town.

What this looks like from a hire car

A museum in the 1,740¹ is typically the only one in its comune, run by a small staff, in a building that was something else first. The collection is often local and specific: one excavation, one workshop, one family.

That specificity is the reason to go and the reason to check ahead. The 4,416¹ institutions in the count include places where the person who opens the door is also the person who catalogued the objects, and where an unannounced Tuesday visit can find a locked gate for entirely ordinary reasons.

Distances are the other constraint. Inner Areas are defined by their distance from services, and that definition means what it says: a museum in one of them is far from a station, and often far from the next museum too.

What the count does not tell you

The 4,416¹ in the ISTAT tables are institutions counted, not visitors and not opening days. A museum in the 1,740¹ may open three afternoons a week or by appointment, and the census does not distinguish between them.

We have not published visitor numbers for Inner Areas museums because we have not read them on a primary source. The distinction matters: 39.4%¹ of institutions is not 39.4%¹ of visits, and nobody should read it that way.

The one operational rule that follows is dull and reliable. Call or write to each place before you go, and treat published hours as a starting point rather than a promise, because a single-staff museum runs on a single person's calendar.
