Ancona in half a day, from the hill to the water

Half a day in Ancona works as one climb and one descent: up Colle Guasco to the cathedral of San Ciriaco, down the Passetto lift to the water for €1.30 return, with the €5 archaeological museum in between.

Colle Guasco: the cathedral on top of a Greek temple

The cathedral of San Ciriaco stands on Colle Guasco, the highest point of Ancona's old town, on the spot where Syracusan colonists built the acropolis of Ankon with a temple to Aphrodite. The 1948 excavations confirmed the Hellenistic temple underneath.

Its plan is a Greek cross, unusual for an Italian cathedral, and the style is Romanesque with Gothic and Byzantine grafts. Two red marble lions hold a serpent and a lamb on the facade, and inside there is an elliptical tabernacle drawn by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1739¹.

Winter opening runs 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to noon and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday. Hours run longer from April to September, but the exact summer times are not published: check on the city tourism portal before you climb.

The climb itself is the reason to go up. From the terrace the harbor bends into an elbow, which is what ankon meant in Greek and where the city took its name.

The Passetto lift, €1.30 down and back

The panoramic lift at the Passetto is run by Conerobus and links the pine grove at the top with the shore and the sea caves below: €1.30 return, €24 for a monthly pass, €56 for the summer season pass (2026). Tickets are sold at the lift station, in cash at the machines or by card from the staff.

The beach at the bottom is white stones, with the caves cut into the cliff and the rock called the Pope's Chair offshore. The alternative is the staircase under the war memorial, which is free and steep.

Conerobus does not publish the running hours of the lift, so treat it as a daytime service and have the stairs as a plan B.

Palazzo Ferretti, €5 and closed Mondays

The National Archaeological Museum of the Marche costs €5 full and €2 reduced for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 in 2026, in Palazzo Ferretti on via Gabriele Ferretti. It closes on Mondays, opens 8:30 am to 1:30 pm Tuesday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Sunday.

A combined ticket with the Roman amphitheater costs €8. The museum has 3D tactile routes and video in Italian sign language, which is worth knowing before you plan the visit rather than after.

Portonovo, and why it needs its own half day

Portonovo is a bay inside Ancona's comune, under Monte Conero, and it is the busiest of the Conero beaches. Pebbles and stones, free stretches and paid ones, and a wild mussel called the mosciolo that grows only on these rocks.

The city page does not say whether summer car access is capped and shuttles made compulsory, which is exactly what you need to know in August. That ordinance is not published in a readable form, so plan for the possibility rather than assume the road is open.

The scale of the place

Ancona had 99,377³ residents on December 31, 2023, first in the Marche ahead of Pesaro at 95,392³, and still below the 100,000³ line. Its port moved 817,627⁴ passengers in 2025, 12% down on the 927,415⁴ of 2024.
