Which is the first thing to understand about this route. It is not a fixed line drawn once and maintained since; it is a network in continuous revision, and its own custodian gives it a range rather than a number.

From a Sardinian headland to the Slovenian border

The route runs between 2 fixed points: it begins at Santa Teresa Gallura, on the northern tip of Sardinia, and ends at Muggia, in the province of Trieste, at the Slovenian frontier.

Between those two points it crosses Sardinia, Sicily, the Apennines and the entire Alpine arc. That order matters: this is not a trail that runs up the spine of the peninsula and stops, it collects the islands first and then works north.

The consequence for planning is that the Sentiero Italia is several different climates and several different mountain cultures joined by a waymark. A stage in Sicily in July and a stage in the Carnic Alps in July are not the same activity, and no single kit list covers both.

What the project provides beyond the path

Beyond maintenance and waymarking of the route, the project publishes 6 things: stage factsheets, GPX tracks, an interactive map, an accreditation scheme for accommodation along the route, a passport for recording completed stages, and an app with digital cartography.

Read that list as an admission. A trail of this length cannot be walked from a printed guide, so the Club has built the infrastructure that makes sectional walking possible: you need the GPX because waymarks fail, and you need the accreditation list because a stage end without a bed is not a stage end.

The passport is the piece that reveals the intended use. It exists because the expected user is someone collecting stages across years, not someone walking from Sardinia to Trieste in one season.
