Bolzano or Trento: which city to base yourself in

Base yourself in Bolzano if you want Ötzi, a cable car to the Renon plateau and the busier of the two provinces, and in Trento if you want the city of the Council, the MUSE and a province that took 19,644,628 nights in 2024 against Bolzano's 37,046,803.

Two blank cells on the Trento side are not a verdict: we have no verified population or altitude for the city, and we'd rather leave the box empty than fill it from a guidebook.

Bolzano is an Italian city inside a German province

Bolzano's own residents are 74.71% Italian-speaking by the 2024 language census, while the province around them is 68.61% German-speaking. The same census, with a reference date of September 30, 2023, puts the city's German group at 24.74% and its Ladin group at 0.55%.

That's the single most useful thing to know about Bolzano as a base. The city is the Italian island, and the German-speaking majority that most visitors picture when they book South Tyrol lives in the rest of the province.

Trento has nothing to compare it with. The province of Trento runs no language census, so any claim about who speaks what there comes from somewhere other than an official count.

The two to one gap belongs to the provinces

The province of Bolzano recorded 37,046,803 overnight stays in 2024, 7.95% of the Italian total, and the province of Trento 19,644,628, or 4.21%. Those figures cover every valley, lake and ski area, not the two cities.

For a city break the gap matters less than it looks. It tells you how much competition there is for beds and lifts once you head into the mountains, and on that front Bolzano's side is the crowded one. It says nothing about how full the streets of either city are on a Tuesday in October.

Bolzano has 107,236 residents at May 31, 2026 and sits at 262 m, the lowest of the Italian alpine provincial capitals. Trento's equivalent figures aren't in our verified sources.

Each city has a cable car that works as a bus

Trento's cable car to Sardagna takes 4 minutes, has run since August 4, 1925, and climbs about 400 m on 1,200 m of line in cabins that hold 13 people. It's run by Trentino trasporti as ordinary public transport, and on days of strong wind a bus takes over.

Bolzano's Renon line is the bigger machine: 4,541 m from the valley station at 274 m to Soprabolzano at 1,222 m, about 12 minutes, with a cabin every 4 minutes. The current 3S system has been in service since May 23, 2009.

The practical difference is height. Sardagna gives you a balcony over Trento; the Renon takes you to a plateau almost a kilometer above the valley, which is a day out rather than a view. Both are covered on the cable cars that are public transport.

A 5,300-year-old body in Bolzano, a Council in Trento

Ötzi has been in Bolzano since 1998, over 5,300 years old, kept in a refrigerated cell that you look into through a small window. Two hikers found him by chance in 1991 at the Tisa pass in Val Senales.

Trento's claim is younger and longer. The Council of Trent sat from 1545 to 1563 in 25 sessions spread over three periods, first in the cathedral of San Vigilio and, from 1562, in Santa Maria Maggiore, because the participants no longer fitted.

The city's modern draw is the MUSE, opened on July 27, 2013 in a Renzo Piano building in the Le Albere district: 12,600 sq m on six levels, 3,700 sq m of it permanent exhibition, with a roofline cut to echo the Trentino peaks. If you're travelling with children who have limited patience for church history, that's the building that tips the choice.

What we could not put side by side

Three comparisons you might expect are missing. Trento's population and altitude are not in our verified sources, and neither is the train time between the two cities, which is the number that decides whether you can base yourself in one and visit the other.

We have logged all three as gaps. Until they're verified, check the regional timetable for the Bolzano to Trento line before you plan a day trip on it.

Pick which

Pick Bolzano if Ötzi is on your list, if you want a plateau above town you can reach without a car, and if you plan to head into the German-speaking valleys where the province's 37,046,803 nights are spent. See Bolzano for the city itself.

Pick Trento if you want a calmer province, the MUSE for a rainy day and the Council for a dry one, and a four-minute ride to a view over the rooftops. See Trento. If your real question is the two provinces rather than the two cities, the numbers are on Trentino or Alto Adige.

FAQ

Is Bolzano a German-speaking city?

No, the city itself is mostly Italian. At the 2024 language census 74.71% of Bolzano's residents declared the Italian group, 24.74% the German group and 0.55% the Ladin group. The province around it is the mirror image: 68.61% German, 26.98% Italian.

Which is busier with tourists, Trento or Bolzano?

Bolzano's province, by almost two to one: 37,046,803 overnight stays in 2024 against 19,644,628 for the province of Trento. Those are provincial totals. Neither city publishes a figure of its own in the sources we use.

How long is the cable car from Trento to Sardagna?

Four minutes. The line has run since August 4, 1925 on 1,200 m of cable, climbs about 400 m in 13-person cabins, and is operated as ordinary public transport by Trentino trasporti. On days of strong wind a bus replaces it.

Where can I see Ötzi the Iceman?

In Bolzano, where he has been kept since 1998 in a refrigerated cell that you see through a small window. He was found by chance by two hikers in 1991 at the Tisa pass in Val Senales, and he is over 5,300 years old.

Does Trento have a language census like Bolzano?

No. The census that sorts residents into German, Italian and Ladin groups exists only in the province of Bolzano, where it decides the allocation of public jobs and resources. The province of Trento has no equivalent count.
