Etna or Vesuvius: which one to climb

Take Vesuvius if you have a single day in the Bay of Naples: 4,010⁵ m of trail, a top height of 1,175⁵ m, two and a half hours and 11.68⁵ euro. Take Etna if the volcano is the point of the trip, because reaching 3,000⁶ m there needs a cable car, a 4x4 and a guide.

The verdict, before the detail

With a trip built on Rome and Naples this is not a real choice: Vesuvius is the one you can fit in. With a trip built on Sicily the same applies in reverse. The comparison only bites when you have time for one flight south and are deciding which one.

Size: they are not in the same category

Etna has a base about 35 km across, a surface of about 1,250² sq km and four summit craters, Bocca Nuova, Voragine, the North-East crater and the South-East crater. About a million people live on its flanks, and it has been erupting for around 500,000³ years.

Vesuvius, by the numbers this site can verify, is a single cone you walk around: the Gran Cono trail runs 4,010⁵ m there and back and reaches 1,175⁵ m above sea level. That is the whole visit.

The consequence is not scenic, it is logistical. On Etna you choose a side of the mountain, a starting altitude and a guide company before you choose a viewpoint. On Vesuvius you choose a time slot.

Activity: one erupts, the other waits

Etna is at yellow alert and shows three kinds of activity, according to INGV: persistent degassing from the summit craters, terminal and subterminal eruptions, and lateral or eccentric eruptions from the flanks. Its eastern side is also deforming eastward at rates above 2 to 4 cm a year.

Vesuvius is at green alert. Its last eruption was in 1944 and it has been quiescent since, with a blocked conduit, which is the profile of a system that reopens abruptly rather than gradually.

For a visitor this inverts the intuition. The volcano that erupts constantly is the one whose behavior is best understood day to day; the quiet one is quiet because nothing has come out of it since 1944. Neither fact should change your booking, but both should change which alert page you read before you go.

Getting up Etna: three vehicles and a guide

The single cable car on the mountain starts at Rifugio Sapienza, on the southern side above Nicolosi, at 1,920 m, and rises to 2,500⁶ m. From the top station the Tour 3000⁶ continues by 4x4 bus, or by snowcat above 2,500⁶ m in winter, to about 2,800⁶ m, and the final section to 3,000⁶ m is walked with a volcanological guide.

Those altitudes are all the operator publishes. Prices and timetables appear on no readable page of its site, and the ticket URLs redirect to a booking engine, so we quote no figure. Budget for a cable car fare, a 4x4 fare and a guide fee as three separate items.

The height at the very top keeps moving anyway. INGV measured 3,369¹ m at the eastern rim of the Voragine on July 7, 2024 by drone survey, the highest ever recorded there, against 3,354¹ m in December 2023 and 3,347¹ m in August 2021.

Getting up Vesuvius: one ticket, bought before you arrive

Trail 5, the Gran Cono, is sold exclusively online in advance at 11.68⁵ euro full and 9.55⁵ euro reduced, with 50 places released for every 10 minute slot up to 30 days ahead. A further 10 tickets per slot go on sale 30 minutes beforehand, named since April 11, 2026, with a maximum of 5 per email address.

The walk is 4,010⁵ m round trip to 1,175⁵ m, allowed two and a half hours, graded low difficulty by the park. Opening hours change four times a year: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm in July and August, to 5:00 pm April to June and in September, to 4:00 pm in March and October, and to 3:00 pm from November to February.

The two figures on the park's pages agree: 60 people every 10 minutes in three groups of 20 is the capacity, and 50 of those places go on sale 30 days ahead while 10 are held for last minute.

So which one

Choose Vesuvius on any trip of one day or less in Campania: it is the only one of the two with a published price, 11.68⁵ euro, a fixed slot and a walk of known length. It also suits anyone who needs a short route on a predictable surface.

Choose Etna if you want to stand at 3,000⁶ m on an active volcano, if you accept booking a guide and paying three separate fares, and if you can give the mountain most of a day plus a weather margin. Etna is the bigger experience and the less predictable purchase, and that trade is the whole of this comparison.
