Catania sits under a volcano whose summit is a World Heritage site, and the highest point you can reach without technical climbing is 3,0003 meters, in three stages: cable car, 4x4 bus, then on foot with a guide.
What is listed, and what the listing covers
Mount Etna went on the World Heritage list in 2013 under natural criterion (viii), and the inscribed property is the uninhabited summit portion of the volcano: 19,2371 hectares, with a buffer zone of 26,2201 hectares.
The argument for it was continuity of record. Eruptions here have been documented for at least 2,7001 years, one of the longest written series anywhere on earth, which makes the mountain a laboratory as much as a landmark. See nobody agrees how tall Etna is.
The park came first, in 1987
The Parco dell'Etna was set up by decree of the president of the Sicilian region on March 17, 1987, the first regional park in Sicily, covering 59,0002 hectares with its office at Nicolosi.
Park and World Heritage site are not the same boundary, and the park is the larger of the two. Most of what a visitor does, the lava fields, the chestnut woods, the villages on the flanks, happens inside the park and outside the inscribed zone.
Three stages to 3,000 meters
The cable car, the only one on the volcano, leaves Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side at 1,920 m and lands at 2,5003 m. From there the Tour 30003 goes on by 4x4 bus, replaced by snowcat in winter, to 2,8003 m, and the final stretch is walked with a volcanological guide to 3,0003 m (2026).
Dress for the altitude and not for Sicily. There are 1,080 meters of climb between the base station and the top of that itinerary, and the summit area is exposed, cold and often above the cloud.
The airport bus, and the ticket that is not valid
The Alibus run by AMT is the city link from Catania Fontanarossa, and the ticket costs €4, valid 90 minutes, usable on the other AMT urban lines too. You can buy it on board with cash or card, in the AMT Catania app, at authorized resellers or at partner hotels. Prices in euros.
Here is the trap that catches people twice a day: ordinary AMT tickets, FCE metro tickets and ordinary season passes are not valid on the Alibus. A ticket bought in town for the metro will not get you to the plane. See getting to Catania.
Taormina, every 30 minutes, from the airport
Interbus runs direct coaches between Catania Fontanarossa and Taormina every 30 minutes in 2026, and that is the connection most people without a car actually use.
The reason is geography. Taormina-Giardini railway station lies at sea level below the old town, so arriving by train leaves you with a climb, a local bus or a taxi at the end. The coach sets you down at the Taormina bus terminal, up the hill. More at things to do in Catania and Sicily.

High and low are the mean daily maximum and minimum, in °F with °C below. Rain days are days with at least 1 mm of rain.
Averages for 1991 to 2020 from the ERA5-Land and ERA5 reanalysis (Copernicus, ECMWF), grid point at 42 m, extracted September 11, 2026. Data: Open-Meteo, CC BY 4.0.
A reanalysis is a model rebuilt from observations, not a weather station. Its values can differ from the station normals quoted in the text, most of all on the coast and in the mountains. It describes the typical month, not a forecast.
