Seven days in eastern Sicily, from Catania

Three bases in seven nights along a 120 km coastal axis, all reachable without a car: Catania 2 nights, Taormina 2, Syracuse 3, starting with a €4 airport bus.

Landing at the busiest airport in Sicily

Catania Fontanarossa handled 12,369,485¹ passengers in 2025, up 0.2% on 2024, fifth in Italy and ahead of Palermo at 9.22¹ million. Everything on this route runs from it.

The airport link into the city is the Alibus service run by AMT: €4, valid 90 minutes, and usable on other AMT urban lines with the same ticket. It is sold on board for cash or card, through the AMT Catania app, at authorized vendors and at partner hotels.

Ordinary AMT tickets, metro tickets and season passes are not valid on Alibus, which is the detail that gets people fined. The operator does not publish the frequency or the first and last departure, referring instead to a timetable board. Prices on this route are in euros.

Days 1 and 2: Catania, one of eight baroque towns

Catania is one of the 8 towns making up the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto, inscribed in 2002 under criteria (i), (ii), (iv) and (v), alongside Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli.

All 8 were rebuilt in the same style after the 1693⁶ earthquake, which is why the region reads as one architectural event rather than eight town centers. Two nights here covers the market, the lava stone streets and a day trip.

Day 3: Etna, from 1,920 m to 3,000

The Etna cable car, the only one on the volcano, leaves the Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side at 1,920 m and reaches 2,500⁴ m. From there the Tour 3000⁴ continues by 4x4 bus, replaced by snowcats in winter, to about 2,800⁴ m and then on foot with a volcanology guide to the 3,000⁴ m mark.

The operator publishes those altitudes but no prices or timetables on any readable page: the ticket links all redirect to a booking engine. Budget the day and buy at the base station.

Etna itself has been World Heritage since 2013 under natural criterion (viii), covering the uninhabited summit area of 19,237⁵ hectares with a buffer zone of 26,220⁵, and its eruptive activity is documented over at least 2,700⁵ years. Its published height varies by source: 3,324 m on the volcanology institute record, 3,350 m on the civil protection sheet and 3,369 m on a July 2024 drone survey of the Voragine rim.

Days 4 and 5: Taormina, above its own station

Interbus runs direct services between Catania airport and Taormina every 30 minutes in 2026, and this is the usual connection without a car because Taormina Giardini station sits below the old town rather than in it.

The operator states that frequency on its home page but publishes neither fare nor journey time on the line pages, and the position of the station is common knowledge rather than something we verified officially. Both gaps are worth knowing before you plan a tight arrival.

The Greek theater costs €14 full and €7 reduced, free for under 18s and for disabled visitors with a companion, open daily 9:00 am to 7:45 pm with last entry at 7:00 pm. In summer it stays accessible until midnight on evening opening dates, with last entry at 11:00 pm, and those dates are published season by season on the park's own blog.

Days 6 and 7: Syracuse, 240,000 square meters of it

The Neapolis archaeological park occupies 240,000⁸ m2 in the northern part of Syracuse and contains the Greek theater, built in the 3rd century BC on 5th century structures, the Roman amphitheater, the Altar of Hieron II, the Latomia del Paradiso with the Ear of Dionysius and the Grotta dei Cordari, and the so called Tomb of Archimedes.

It costs €14 full and €7 reduced and opens every day 8:30 am to 7:40 pm, with the ticket office shutting at 6:30 pm. The city council page quotes €16.50⁹ and €9.75⁹ instead, which probably includes booking fees; the figure here is the regional operator's own.

Do not put the museums on a Monday. The Paolo Orsi archaeological museum closes on Mondays and opens Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, ticket office to 6:00 pm, and Sundays and holidays 9:00 am to 1:45 pm; Palazzo Cappellani next door keeps the same closing day.

The second half of the listing, 40 km inland

Syracuse shares its World Heritage inscription with Pantalica: listed in 2005 under criteria (ii), (iii), (iv) and (vi), in two components, the ancient city of Ortigia and Neapolis, and the Pantalica plateau 40 km away with over 5,000¹¹ tombs cut into the rock, most of them between the 13th and 7th centuries BC.

Corinthian settlers founded Syracuse in 743¹¹ BC. Pantalica needs a car or a tour, and it is the one part of this itinerary that public transport does not solve.
