Rome: the answers that carry a date

Four numbers decide a Rome budget in 2026: a tourist tax of €3.00 to €10.00 a person a night for up to 10 nights, a Roma Pass at €38.00 for 48 hours or €62.90 for 72, €2 to reach the Trevi basin, and €18 for a named, timed Colosseum ticket.

The tax: €6.00 in most B&Bs and short lets

Rome's contributo di soggiorno runs from €3.00 a person a night in campsites to €10.00 in 5-star hotels, and it stops after 10 consecutive nights in the same property. In between: €4.00 for 1 star, €5.00 for 2, €6.00 for 3 and €7.50 for 4, with €6.00 for B&Bs, holiday apartments and short-term rentals and €3.50 for hostels.

The Giunta Capitolina set these rates on July 17, 2023, and they have applied since October 1, 2023. Some guides still print €7.00 for a 4-star hotel; the official table says €7.50. How it compares across cities is at the tourist tax in Italy.

Is the Roma Pass worth it for three days?

Only if both free entries go on expensive sites. The 72-hour pass costs €62.90 and bundles two free entries with unlimited city transport; a 72-hour ATAC transport ticket on its own is €22.00.

So the pass's extra €40.90 has to buy two entries worth more than that, and a full Colosseum ticket is €18. The 48-hour version costs €38.00 with one free entry, and both versions cover the urban network for the life of the card.
