Rome: 30 days ahead, and 75 minutes inside

Two numbers govern a Rome trip: Colosseum tickets go on sale 30 days before the date, and the standard ticket allows 75 minutes inside the amphitheater, so the visit is a scheduled appointment rather than a walk in.

The Colosseum sells named, timed tickets

Every ticket at the Parco archeologico del Colosseo carries a name and a compulsory entry slot, online sales open 30 days before the visit date, and the ordinary 24 hour ticket restricts your time inside the amphitheater itself to 75 minutes (2026).

What the €18 ticket covers is wider than the arena: the first level, the second level with the panoramic terraces, the Colosseum museum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €2, and Roma Pass holders €11.50. Prices in euros. Plan the Forum and Palatine for the same 24 hours, because that is what you have paid for. See things to do in Rome.

Roma Pass: 48 or 72 hours, and the sums

The 48 hour card costs €38.00 and includes one free entry to a museum or archaeological site; the 72 hour card costs €62.90 and includes two. Both carry unlimited travel on the urban public transport network for their duration.

Beyond that they give reduced rates at other museums and sites, discounts on exhibitions, and free use of the P.stop toilet network, which is less trivial than it sounds in August. The card comes as an app for iOS and Android or as a physical card from the Tourist Infopoints. Do the arithmetic against your own list before buying: two entries and unlimited metro is a good deal for a museum heavy three days and a poor one for a walking trip.

The Pantheon went to €7 on July 1, 2026

Entry is charged, and the full ticket rose from €5.00 to €7.00 on July 1, 2026, under the agreement signed on April 10, 2026 between the culture ministry and the diocese of Rome. Ages 18 to 25 pay €2.00 and under 18s enter free.

It opens every day 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, last entry 6:30 pm, and closes on December 25 and January 1. It is still a working church, so services interrupt visiting, and the queue outside moves faster than it looks. More at the tickets and museums FAQ.

Five limited traffic zones, five timetables

Rome operates 5 limited traffic zones and they do not share hours: the Centro Storico one is active Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 6:00 pm, and not on public holidays.

Centro StoricoMon-Fri6:30 am - 6:00 pm
Centro StoricoSaturday2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Trastevere and San Lorenzo, nightWed-Sat9:30 pm - 3:00 am
Centro Storico and Testaccio, nightFri-Sat11:00 pm - 3:00 am

The night zones are all suspended in August. Electronic gates read plates at the entrances, and a rental car in the wrong street at the wrong hour produces a fine months later. See getting to Rome.

The bed tax, per person per night

Rates run from €3.00 per person per night at temporary parking areas to €10.00 in five star hotels, under the Giunta Capitolina decision 255 of July 17, 2023, applied from October 1, 2023. Hotels pay €4.00 at one star, €5.00 at two, €6.00 at three and €7.50 at four.

B&Bs, holiday apartments, country houses, farm stays and short lets sit at €6.00, guest houses run €5.00 to €7.00 by category, hostels and mountain refuges €3.50. The cap is 10 consecutive nights in the same property, 5 nights at temporary parking areas. Small hosts often collect it in cash on arrival, so keep a few notes. See where to stay in Rome and Lazio.

FAQ

How far in advance do Colosseum tickets go on sale?

30 days before the date of visit. The ticket is issued in your name with a compulsory entry slot, and the standard 24 hour ticket limits your stay inside the amphitheater to 75 minutes. It costs €18, or €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25.

Is the Roma Pass worth it for three days?

The 72 hour card is €62.90 and gives two free museum or site entries plus unlimited urban transport. Against a €18 Colosseum ticket and a €7 Pantheon ticket, it pays off only if you are also riding the metro daily and using the reduced rates elsewhere.

Do you have to pay to enter the Pantheon?

Yes. Since July 1, 2026 the full ticket is €7.00, up from €5.00, under the agreement of April 10, 2026 between the culture ministry and the diocese of Rome. Ages 18 to 25 pay €2.00 and under 18s go free. It opens daily 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

When is the ZTL active in central Rome?

In the Centro Storico zone, Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with no restriction on public holidays. The Tridente zone runs 6:30 am to 7:00 pm Monday to Friday and 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturday.

How much is the tourist tax in Rome per night?

4.00 per person in a one star hotel up to €10.00 in a five star, with €6.00 in B&Bs, holiday apartments and short lets and €3.50 in hostels, capped at 10 consecutive nights in the same property. The rates were set on July 17, 2023 and applied from October 1, 2023.
