Italy by train: 12 city pairs, real times

On the timetable running in September 2026, the fastest direct trains take 1h13 from Rome to Naples, 1h35 from Rome to Florence, 2h27 from Milan to Venice, 2h55 from Rome to Milan and 4h14 from Rome to Bari, and the last of those is the number that changes an itinerary.

The twelve pairs, fastest direct service

  • Rome to Naples: 1h13, median 1h18, 45 direct Frecciarossa on a weekday
  • Milan to Bologna: 1h04
  • Rome to Florence: 1h35, median 1h41, 48 direct trains
  • Milan to Florence: 1h54
  • Rome to Bologna: 2h03
  • Florence to Venice: 2h14
  • Milan to Venice: 2h27
  • Rome to Milan: 2h55, median 3h15, 46 direct trains
  • Rome to Venice: 3h59
  • Rome to Bari: 4h14, median 4h23, only 6 direct trains
  • Rome to Turin: 4h25, median 4h55
  • Milan to Naples: 4h33, median 4h45, 27 direct trains

All of these were read directly on the Trenitalia booking system for Tuesday, September 8, 2026, counting only services without a change.

The fastest train and the one you will actually book

Rome to Milan runs 2h55 at best but 3h15 at the median, and up to 7h13 on the slowest direct service, so the difference between the headline and your ticket is 20 minutes to 4 hours. The same applies to Rome to Turin, 4h25 against a 4h55 median.

Book on the time shown for your specific train, not on the record. Where we have a median we have printed it, because it is the more honest number.

Bologna is the pivot, not Rome

Bologna Centrale is where the north-south high speed axis crosses the line towards Venice, at 1h04 from Milan and 2h03 from Rome. That geometry is why a Rome, Florence, Venice triangle works without backtracking.

Florence to Venice takes 2h14 and Milan to Florence 1h54, which puts four of the five most visited Italian cities within two hours of each other. Naples is 1h13 from Rome, so a fifth base costs one morning.

Where the high speed line stops

Rome to Bari takes 4h14 with 6 direct Frecciarossa on a weekday, against 45 to Naples: the route is not served by a continuous high speed line. We infer that from the times and the frequency rather than from an RFI network map, so treat the reason as probable and the times as measured.

Milan to Venice has the same shape in miniature. The 2h27 is held up by the Brescia to Verona to Padua section, which is still being upgraded, and the spread between fastest and slowest direct train is only 5 minutes.

What these numbers are, and when they expire

Every time here was measured on one weekday, September 8, 2026, on the Trenitalia system only. Italo runs many of these routes and its times are not included, so a faster Italo service may exist on the same pair.

The Italian timetable changes in the middle of December every year. After that date, treat these as indicative and check the operator. Rules on validating tickets, which differ between regional and high speed services, are not covered here because we have no verified source for them yet.

FAQ

How long is the train from Rome to Florence?

1 hour 35 minutes on the fastest direct Frecciarossa, with a median of 1 hour 41 across 48 direct services on the weekday we measured. Slower direct trains on the same route take up to 1 hour 57.

How long does Rome to Milan take by train?

2 hours 55 minutes on the fastest direct high speed train. The median of the direct Frecciarossa services is 3 hours 15, across 46 direct trains on a weekday, and the slowest direct option runs 7 hours 13.

Is there a fast train from Rome to Bari?

Not in the same sense. The fastest direct Frecciarossa takes 4 hours 14 minutes and only 6 direct services ran on the weekday we checked, because the line is not high speed for the whole route.

What is the fastest train between Milan and Venice?

2 hours 27 minutes to Venezia Santa Lucia, with almost no spread: the slowest direct service we found took 2 hours 32. The Brescia to Verona to Padua section is not yet high speed, which is what holds the time up.

Which Italian station is the hub for changing trains?

Bologna Centrale, where the Turin to Naples axis crosses the line towards Venice. Milan to Bologna takes 1 hour 4 minutes and Rome to Bologna 2 hours 3, which makes it the natural pivot for a triangle itinerary.
