Trains in Italy: times on the main pairs

The six pairs that carry most visitors run to measured times: Rome to Florence 1 hour 35 minutes, Rome to Naples 1 hour 13, Rome to Milan 2 hours 55, Milan to Venice 2 hours 27, Florence to Venice 2 hours 14, Rome to Venice 3 hours 59.

Rome, Florence, Naples: the short legs

Rome to Florence takes 1 hour 35 minutes on the fastest direct high-speed service and 1 hour 41 as the median of the direct Frecciarossa runs, with 48 of them on the weekday we counted. Frequency is what makes the corridor forgiving, not speed.

Rome to Naples is shorter still, 1 hour 13 minutes at best and 1 hour 18 as the median, with 45 direct services a weekday. Both legs work in either direction as a day out, which is not true of anything longer on this page.

The long legs, and how they change an itinerary

Rome to Milan runs 2 hours 55 minutes at best, 3 hours 15 as the median, over 46 direct Frecciarossa services on a weekday. Rome to Venice is 3 hours 59 at best, and that changes what you can plan around it.

Milan to Venice is 2 hours 27 and Florence to Venice 2 hours 14. Read together, those four numbers explain why the standard three-base trip goes Rome, Florence, Venice rather than Rome, Venice, Florence: the long hop happens once, in the middle, and never twice.

The slowest run is the one to plan for

On Rome to Milan the slowest direct service takes 7 hours 13 minutes against the 2 hours 55 of the fastest, and on Rome to Naples 2 hours 3 against 1 hour 13. The gap between best and worst is where itineraries break.

Milan to Venice is the exception, with 2 hours 32 at worst against 2 hours 27 at best. Booking by price alone on the other pairs is how travelers end up on the slow one.

The city with no national line

Matera is the only Italian provincial capital with no connection to the national rail network, reached instead by the narrow-gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane from Bari. The new single-track electrified line from Ferrandina to Matera La Martella, 12 miles (20 km) built for €525⁷ million partly from EU recovery funds, has been under construction since 2023 with completion planned for 2028.
