Venice: no access fee now, and what you do pay

As of September 2, 2026 there is no access fee to enter Venice: the 2026 trial ended on July 27, and what you actually pay here is the boat fare, at €9.50 for 75 minutes, plus the bed tax.

The access fee is not in force

The contributo di accesso is a charge on day visitors to the old city, and the 2026 trial ran from April 3 to July 26, 2026 across 60 non consecutive days. It stopped applying on July 27, 2026, and any return in later years is up to the city council.

For the record, in 2026 the amount was €5 per person if paid up to the fourth day before the visit and €10 if paid within the three days before, in the 8:30 am to 4:00 pm window on calendar days. The boat fare, and the lines it does not cover

An ordinary ACTV ticket costs €9.50 and lasts 75 minutes across the combined network: boats, buses, trams and the People Mover (2026). The bus only 75 minute ticket is €1.50, a carnet of ten bus rides is €14, and buying a bus ticket on board costs €3.

The exclusions matter more than the price. The boat ticket is not valid on lines 16 and 19, on the Casinò line or on Alilaguna, and it does not cover journeys to or from Marco Polo airport. On the vaporetti you can only buy by card, never with cash, and the ticket comes already validated. A return to the beaches on lines 14 and 15 is €16.

Multi day passes start at first validation

The timed passes cost €25 for 24 hours, €35 for 48, €45 for 72 and €65 for 168⁴ hours, meaning seven days (2026). The 24 hour version, the Venezia Daily Pass, also covers regional Trenitalia trains inside the municipality.

Two things to know. Validity runs from your first validation, not from midnight, so a pass bought at 3:00 pm on Friday lasts until 3:00 pm on Saturday. And travelers aged 6 to 29 pay €27 for the 72 hour pass once they have bought the €6 Rolling Venice card, which beats every other combination. A Mestre daily pass is €5. See getting to Venice.

The bed tax changes by zone and season

In the historic center in high season, February 1 to December 31, the tax runs from €1.00 per person per night in a one star hotel to €5.00 in a five star, with holiday apartments and B&Bs between €2.00 and €5.00 by category, campsites from €0.10 and holiday villages from €0.50. It applies for a maximum of 5 consecutive nights, under the rates in force since April 1, 2025.

Geography changes the bill: the Lido and the lagoon islands pay 20% less than the center, the mainland 30% less, and in January the base rates drop 30% everywhere. This is separate from the access fee, and it has never stopped applying. See where to stay in Venice.

Groups are capped at 25

Guided tourist groups may not exceed 25 people, and guides may not use loudspeakers or stop in places that obstruct pedestrian flow. The rule came into force in August 2024, and 3 fines were issued on the first day it applied.

School parties on educational visits are exempt, and so are boarding and disembarking from boats, along with information given on board.
