Veneto: Italy's first region for nights

Veneto recorded 73,472,377¹ overnight stays in 2024, 15.76%¹ of the Italian total and nearly 22 million more than second placed Lazio, which isn't what most online rankings say.

The number, and the ranking that gets it wrong

Eurostat's 2024 figures put Veneto first at 73,472,377¹ nights and Lazio second at 51,753,567². Lists that place Veneto third are usually measuring arrivals rather than nights, or reusing an older series, and the two measures answer different questions.

Nights matter more for anyone planning a trip, because they describe pressure on beds rather than passages through a turnstile. Veneto's total is spread across Venice, Verona, Lake Garda, the Adriatic beaches and the Dolomites, which is why the region can lead the country without feeling uniformly full.

Venice: the access fee is not in force

As of September 2, 2026 there is no access fee to enter Venice. The 2026 trial ran from April 3 to July 26, 2026, over 60 non consecutive days, and it ended: the charge has not applied since July 27, 2026. Reintroduction in later years is a decision for the city administration and has not been taken.

While it applied, the fee was €5 per person if paid up to four days ahead and €10 if paid within the three days before arrival, in the 8:30 am to 4:00 pm window on scheduled days. It only ever targeted day visitors, never overnight guests.

The tourist tax is separate and permanent. In the historic center in high season, February 1 to December 31, it runs from €1.00 per person per night at a one star hotel to €5.00 at five stars, for a maximum of five consecutive nights, with January reduced by 30% and the Lido, Murano, Burano and the mainland reduced further.

Nine listings, and two of them are in Padua

The nine are Venice and its lagoon, 1987; Vicenza with the Palladian villas, 1994; Verona, 2000; the Padua botanical garden, 1997; the Dolomites, 2009; the Alpine pile dwellings, 2011; the Venetian defense works, 2017; the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, 2019; and Padova Urbs picta, 2021.

The botanical garden was founded in 1545⁸ so that university students could study medicinal plants alive, and it is the oldest university botanical garden in the world still on its original site. It covers 3.5 hectares with 3,500⁸ plant species and opens Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, last entry 6:15 pm, closed on working Mondays.

Padova Urbs picta, inscribed in 2021, isn't one monument but eight complexes holding fresco cycles painted between 1302⁹ and 1397⁹: the Scrovegni Chapel, the Eremitani church, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Carrarese palace chapel, the cathedral Baptistery, the Basilica and convent of Sant'Antonio, and the oratories of San Giorgio and San Michele. Giotto, Guariento, Giusto de' Menabuoi, Altichiero, Jacopo Avanzi and Jacopo da Verona worked on them.

Vicenza and 24 villas, spread over the countryside

The Vicenza listing, inscribed in 1994 under criteria i and ii, covers 333.87¹⁰ hectares as a serial site: the city itself plus twenty four Palladian villas scattered across the region. It's a listing about influence, since Andrea Palladio started an architectural movement that ran for three centuries.

That geography is the planning problem. The villas aren't in Vicenza, they're in the fields between Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, and reaching more than two or three in a day needs a car. See the Palladian villas.

Five of the nine Dolomite systems are here

The Dolomites were inscribed on June 26, 2009 at the Seville session as a serial natural property of nine systems, across Veneto in the province of Belluno, Friuli Venezia Giulia in Pordenone and Udine, and the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento. On May 13, 2010 the provinces and regions involved set up the Fondazione Dolomiti UNESCO to manage it.

Veneto holds the largest share: five of the nine systems, all in the province of Belluno, namely Pelmo and Croda da Lago, the Marmolada, the Pale and Dolomiti Bellunesi in two portions, and the Dolomiti Friulane.

The Prosecco hills, and what a ciglione is

The Conegliano and Valdobbiadene Prosecco hills, in the province of Treviso, became a World Heritage cultural landscape in 2019. The distinctive element is the ciglione: a narrow grass terrace holding a small vineyard, with no dry stone wall, alternating with woods, hedges, tree corridors and scattered villages.

The other thing to look for is the bellussera, a training system invented by the Bellussi brothers in the late 19th century against downy mildew: wooden posts 3 to 4 m high with crossed wires making a honeycomb pattern that is obvious from above. Radicchio Rosso di Treviso IGP has been in the EU register since July 2, 1996.
