62, and why you will read other numbers
Italy ratified the World Heritage Convention on June 23, 1978 and has been inscribed on the list almost every year since, which is why a total from three years ago is already wrong. The last three additions were the Via Appia in 2024, the domus de janas funerary tradition of prehistoric Sardinia in 2025, and the system of Italian style tiered theaters of central Italy in 2026.
The split is 56 cultural to 6 natural. The 6 natural ones are the ancient beech forests, the evaporitic karst and caves of the northern Apennines, the Aeolian Islands, Monte San Giorgio, Mount Etna and the Dolomites.
Another 30 Italian sites sit on the tentative list, which is the queue a country maintains for future nominations, not a lesser category.
Counting by region needs a rule, and here is ours
Lombardy holds 10 sites, Tuscany and Veneto 9 each, Campania, Emilia-Romagna and Sicily 7, Lazio 6, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Piedmont and Puglia 5. Counting this way, where a site that crosses regions counts once for each region it touches, produces 86 site-region pairs out of 62 properties.
Change the rule and the ranking changes with it. If each site is assigned to a single lead region, the numbers fall and the order shifts, which is how two honest sources end up disagreeing.
The 8 sites that belong to several regions at once
8 of the 62 have components in more than one region. The largest is the serial transnational beech forest site, whose Italian components sit in 7 regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Puglia and Tuscany.
The rest: the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy; the Dolomites across Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia; the Longobard sites in 5 regions; the prehistoric pile dwellings in 5; the Venetian defense works in 3; the Via Appia in 4; and the tiered theaters in 3.
None of them belongs to one place, and a page that files the Dolomites under a single region has already lost the plot.
Two regions have none
Molise and Valle d'Aosta are the only Italian regions without a World Heritage property in 2026. Molise contains part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park, but none of the inscribed beech forest components falls within its section.
That absence is a fact about the list, not about the places. Molise has Saepinum and Pietrabbondante; the list simply does not include them.
Intangible heritage is a separate list
Italy has 21 elements on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists in 2026: 20 on the representative list and 1 in the register of good safeguarding practices. Italian cuisine was added in 2025, traditional bell ringing and dry stone walling in 2024.
Many are shared nominations with other countries, including the Mediterranean diet, falconry, alpinism, dry stone walling and transhumance. They are not World Heritage sites and should never be added to the 62.
