This map places all 62 Italian World Heritage properties and draws the 8 that cross regional borders as single properties, rather than as separate points in each region they touch.
What the map shows
Italy has 62 properties on the World Heritage list in 2026: 56 cultural and 6 natural, with no mixed site.
54 of them lie within a single region, and 8 are transregional, with components in more than one. The six natural ones are the ancient beech forests, the evaporitic karst of the northern Apennines, the Aeolian Islands, Monte San Giorgio, Mount Etna and the Dolomites.
Eight serial sites, drawn as one property
The largest of the eight is the ancient beech forests, with Italian components in 7 regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Puglia and Tuscany.
The others are the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, the Dolomites across 3 regions, the Longobards in Italy across 5, the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Alps across 5, the Venetian defense works across 3, the Via Appia across 4, and the Italian style theaters of central Italy, inscribed in 2026, across 3.
Counted region by region, the 62 properties make 86 pairs of site and region. Drawn as one shape each, they count once, and that's what this map does.
How region totals are counted
Lombardy leads with 10 sites when every serial property counts in each region it touches, ahead of Tuscany and Veneto at 9 each.
Molise and the Aosta Valley are the only two regions with none. Assign each serial site to one lead region instead and the totals change, which is why the map shows the shapes and leaves the ranking to UNESCO sites by region. See also the two regions with no UNESCO site.
Where the regional lines come from
The regional attribution comes from the UNESCO office of the culture ministry, completed with Wikidata where the ministry's sheet is missing or vague, as for the Aeolian Islands, the Dolomites and Monte San Giorgio.
The two newest inscriptions, the domus de janas of Sardinia in 2025 and the theaters of central Italy in 2026, had no ministry sheet yet when the mapping was made. Their regions come from the listing itself. More on the list in UNESCO in Italy.
