Puglia holds 5 World Heritage sites in 2026, and only two belong to it alone: Castel del Monte and the trulli of Alberobello, both inscribed in 1996.
Two of its own, three shared
Puglia's five start with a double inscription in 1996, Castel del Monte and the trulli of Alberobello. The other three are serial sites spread across several regions.
The ancient beech forests, listed in 2007, are shared with Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio and Tuscany. The Longobards in Italy, places of power, from 2011, with Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Umbria and Campania. The Via Appia, Regina Viarum, from 2024, with Lazio, Campania and Basilicata.
The beech forest share is on the Gargano, and it has its own page on nature in Puglia.
Alberobello: 10.52 hectares, over 1,500 trulli
The trulli of Alberobello were inscribed in 1996 under criteria iii, iv and v, and the protected zone covers 10.522 hectares in the Rione Monti and Aia Piccola districts, with over 1,5002 trulli inside it.
The technique is the reason for the listing. Walls are dry stone, with limestone slabs called chiancarelle and no mortar, built as a double skin around a loose core, over underground cisterns that collect rainwater.
Trulli stood in the Rione Monti by the middle of the sixteenth century, and the town grew after 16202. In 17972 Ferdinand IV of Bourbon made Alberobello a royal city, and building new trulli declined from then on. Parts of the town were declared a national monument between 1909 and 1936.
The Trullo Sovrano closes for lunch
The Trullo Sovrano, in Piazza Sacramento, costs €2.50 on a single ticket in 2026 and closes in the middle of the day, all year. It opens 10:00 am to 12:45 pm and 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm from November to March, and 10:00 am to 12:45 pm and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm from April to October.
The shop trulli of the Rione Monti do not close at midday, which is how visitors end up in front of a locked door after a morning of open ones. The official site gives neither the building's height nor its century, so this page doesn't either.
Castel del Monte: 120 people a slot, 45 minutes inside
Castel del Monte admits at most 1204 people per time slot, and each visit is limited to 45 minutes. From October 1 to March 31 it opens 9:00 am to 5:45 pm, last entry 5:00 pm; from April 1 to September 30, 10:00 am to 6:45 pm, last entry 6:00 pm (2026).
It closes on December 25 and January 1. In high season, buy online: the cap per slot is the constraint, not the size of the building.
The Via Appia: Puglia's newest listing
The Via Appia, Regina Viarum, joined the list in 2024 as a serial site across 4 regions: Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. It is the most recent addition to Puglia's count.
The sources behind this page do not name the Apulian stretches included in the listing, so none is given. More in Puglia, Castel del Monte, the trulli of Alberobello, Matera or Alberobello and seven days in Puglia by car.
