Choose Sicily if the trip is about monuments and volcanoes, with 7 UNESCO sites entirely its own, and Puglia if you'd rather arrive from Rome by train, 4 hours 14 minutes to Bari at best; on visitor numbers the two are level, 17,894,3611 nights in 2024 against 17,348,2382.

The top two rows are a tie. The next four are where the two regions stop resembling each other.
Level on visitor numbers
Puglia recorded 17,894,3611 overnight stays in 2024, 3.84%1 of Italy's total, and Sicily 17,348,2382, or 3.72%2. The difference is about half a million nights over a whole year.
Don't read a verdict into it. What the tie does tell you is that neither region is the quiet option: both host roughly the same amount of tourism, and both concentrate it in the same months.
Seven whole sites against two, plus three shares
Sicily's 7 World Heritage sites all lie entirely on the island: Agrigento's Valley of the Temples and the Villa Romana del Casale, both from 1997, the Aeolian Islands in 2000, the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto in 2002, Siracusa with the rock necropolis of Pantalica in 2005, Mount Etna in 2013, and Arab-Norman Palermo with the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale in 2015.
Puglia's 5 include only two sites wholly its own, Castel del Monte and the trulli of Alberobello, both from 1996. The other three are components of serial sites shared with other regions: the ancient beech forests from 2007, the Longobard sites of power from 2011, and the Via Appia, added in 2024.
That's the real difference. Sicily's heritage is a list of separate, complete destinations you could build a trip around one by one; Puglia's is two famous places and three pieces of larger networks.
Sicily's airports are bigger
Catania handled 12,369,4857 passengers in 2025 and Palermo 9,220,9058, against 7,977,8815 at Bari and 3,444,4386 at Brindisi. Both Sicilian airports are bigger than Puglia's largest.
Puglia is catching up faster, though: Bari grew 9.7% on 2024, while Catania grew 0.2% and Palermo 3.4%. For you, the practical reading is that Sicily offers more flights today, and Puglia's two airports split the region neatly, Bari for the north and center, Brindisi for Salento.
Puglia is the one you can reach from Rome by train
The fastest direct Frecciarossa from Roma Termini to Bari Centrale takes 4 hours 14 minutes. There were only 6 direct Frecciarossa trains on the weekday surveyed in September 2026, because the route has no continuous high-speed line.
Six trains a day is enough to plan around but not enough to be casual about. Sicily, by contrast, means crossing the Strait of Messina, which is covered on ferries to Sicily; for Bari, see Rome to Bari by train.
What the climate data can and can't say
For western Sicily the 1991-2020 normals give Trapani an annual mean of 18.1 °C10 with 488.9 mm10 of rain, and Ustica 18.0 °C with 525.7 mm10. Both show the extreme Mediterranean pattern: July brings 2.9 to 3.9 mm of rain.
For Puglia we have nothing comparable, because no complete station series from the region is in the data we use. So on the question people ask most, September or August with small children, this page can tell you that western Sicily will be dry and warm, and can't give you a single number for Puglia. We'd rather say so than guess.
Pick which
Pick Sicily if you want a trip built on monuments, Etna and the islands, and you'll fly: seven complete World Heritage sites and the two bigger airports. Start from Sicily.
Pick Puglia if you'd rather come by train from Rome, want Castel del Monte and the trulli without a crossing, and prefer a region whose two airports split it north and south. Start from Puglia. If Sardinia is also on your list, see Sicily or Sardinia.
