The fastest direct Frecciarossa from Roma Termini to Bari Centrale takes 4 hours 14 minutes, and only 6 direct Frecciarossa ran on the weekday sampled, because the route has no continuous high-speed line (September 2026).

4 hours 14 minutes fastest, 4 hours 23 median, 4 hours 41 slowest, on 6 direct Frecciarossa in a weekday. Compare that with 46 direct services on Rome to Milan and the difference stops being about speed and becomes about choice: on this route a missed train is a 2-hour wait, not a 20-minute one.

The claim that the line is not continuously high speed is an inference from those times and that frequency, not a fact read off the infrastructure manager's map. We are marking it as such rather than repeating it as certainty.

What that means for the shape of a day

That is one of the few places in Italy where the fast train and the regional train cost almost the same. Frecciarossa fares move with availability while the regional fare does not, so the gap is 1.70 euro at the base and wider later.

Bari between trains

The Swabian Castle opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (09:00 to 19:00), at 10 euro full and 2 euro reduced, with last entry an hour before closing and Sunday reduced to 9:00 am to 1:30 pm from October to March. It is run by the regional directorate of national museums for Puglia.

It goes back to 1131⁵ under Roger the Norman and was rebuilt by Frederick II in the 13th century, which is the short version of why the walls do not match. Monday closure is the thing to check against your 6 possible trains.
