As of September 2, 2026 there is no access fee to enter Venice: the 2026 trial ended on July 26 and since July 27, 2026 no payment and no exemption registration applies.
Last checked September 2, 2026: nothing to pay
The comune declared the 2026 trial concluded, and from July 27, 2026 the access fee does not apply. There is no charge for day visitors and no exemption code to obtain for anyone.
This page exists because most travel content still tells you otherwise. The fee was real, it was applied on calendar days in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and it has stopped; content written during those seasons has not caught up.
Any application in a future year requires a fresh resolution from the giunta comunale. Until one is passed, the correct answer to the question is no.
What the 2026 trial actually was
The 2026 edition ran from April 3 to July 26, 2026, on 60 non-consecutive calendar days, and applied to day visitors to the old city between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm. The minor islands were excluded by the regulation.
The amount was €5 per person paid up to the fourth-to-last day before the visit and €10 paid in the days immediately before, a structure designed to push people to book ahead. It was set by a resolution of the giunta comunale on November 19, 2025.
Overnight guests were never the target. The charge was for escursionisti, day trippers, and people staying in the city paid a separate accommodation tax instead, as they still do.
Two official day counts, and we cannot reconcile them
The number of days in the 2026 calendar is stated as 60 in one official source and 68 in another, with the second breaking down as 17 days in April, 15 in May, 18 in June and 12 in July. Press reports use 60.
We have not been able to resolve that discrepancy against the official calendar, so both figures appear here with their provenance. The trial is over, so the difference is now historical, but it is a good illustration of why a single unsourced number in a travel article is worth nothing.
If the fee returns in 2027, the calendar of days will be the detail that decides whether it touches your trip, and it is the detail most likely to be reported wrong.
Why this is the most repeated error about Venice
The access fee was the first charge of its kind applied by any city in the world, which is why it was covered so widely and why the coverage outlived the measure. Search results still describe it in the present tense.
The test for any page you read on this subject is simple: does it carry a date. A statement that Venice charges an entrance fee, with no date attached, is not information; it was true on certain days in three seasons and false on all the others.
The official portal is cda.ve.it. It is the source that states the 2026 trial is over, and it is where a 2027 decision would appear first.
If a resolution is passed for a future year, the shape to expect is the 2026 one: day visitors to the old city, €5 or €10, between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, on listed calendar days only. Nothing beyond that is known today, and nothing is owed in the meantime.
What you actually pay in Venice today
You pay nothing to walk into Venice, as of September 2, 2026. If you sleep in the city you pay the accommodation tax through your hotel or apartment, which is a separate and long-standing charge.
Everything else is the usual arithmetic of a day in Venice: transport, tickets, and the choice between walking and the vaporetto. Start with getting to Venice and Venice.
For the other Venetian number that gets repeated without a date, see 78 gates and 100 liftings.
