Marche: 10,481,674 nights in 2024, 2.25% of Italy

Marche recorded 10,481,674 overnight stays in 2024, 2.25% of the 466,158,045 counted nationally, which is just over seven tourist nights a year for each of its 1,482,746 residents.

2.25% of Italy, and under a quarter of Tuscany

The 10,481,674 nights spent in Marche's accommodation in 2024 are 2.25% of the Italian total. Tuscany, next door, logged 46,220,821 in the same year, 9.92%, more than four times as many.

That gap is the most useful single fact about crowds here. The two regions share a border and a lot of the same hill-town landscape, and they don't share the same pressure.

Seven nights per resident

Marche had 1,482,746 residents at December 31, 2023, in 225 comuni and five provinces. Set against the 2024 nights, that is just over seven tourist nights per resident.

The two dates are a year apart, which is close enough for a ratio and not for anything finer. Nearly a third of residents, 461,629 or 31.1%, live in the province of Ancona.

The nights aren't broken down by province in the series used here, so it isn't possible to say whether visitors follow the same map as residents.

Arrivals by air: a running total for 2026

Ancona-Falconara airport handled 345,397 passengers from January to July 2026, and 67,242 of them in July. That is a cumulative figure for part of the year, and the full-year total doesn't exist yet.

July alone was nearly a fifth of the seven-month total, which is the clearest seasonal signal in the data here.

The port counts people in transit too

Ancona's port handled 817,627 passengers in 2025, 739,399 on ferries and 78,228 on cruise ships, 12% fewer than the 927,415 of 2024. The fall is partly explained by the temporary suspension of the Ancona to Split line.

A ferry passenger is counted whether or not they spend a night in Marche, so the port figure and the ISTAT nights answer different questions. Only the second measures a stay.

Why 2024 is the last comparable year

From 2025 ISTAT's accommodation survey includes non-professional rentals, and a total that grows because the count grew isn't growth. The 10,481,674 nights of 2024 are the last figure on the old basis, and the port comparison above also uses 2024 as its base.

Using the number

At 2.25% of national nights, crowds in Marche are a matter of specific places on specific days, not of the region.

FAQ

Is Marche less crowded than Tuscany?

Yes, by a wide margin. Marche recorded 10,481,674 overnight stays in 2024, 2.25% of Italy's total; Tuscany next door recorded 46,220,821, or 9.92%. Tuscany takes more than four times as many nights.

How many overnight stays did Marche record in 2024?

10,481,674, out of 466,158,045 in Italian accommodation, a share of 2.25%. Against 1,482,746 residents counted at the end of 2023, that is just over seven tourist nights per resident a year.

Is July the busy month in Marche?

It is on the one monthly figure available. Ancona-Falconara airport handled 67,242 passengers in July 2026, nearly a fifth of its 345,397 for January to July. ISTAT's monthly nights for the region aren't in the data used here.

Do Ancona ferry passengers count as tourists in Marche?

Not necessarily. The port counted 817,627 passengers in 2025, 739,399 on ferries and 78,228 on cruises, and a passenger is counted whether or not they sleep in the region. ISTAT's 10,481,674 nights for 2024 measure stays, which is a different thing.
