Tuscany: 46,220,821 nights in 2024, third in Italy

Tuscany recorded 46,220,821 overnight stays in 2024, 9.92% of Italy's 466,158,045 and the third highest total after Veneto and Lazio.

Third of 21, behind Veneto and Lazio

Veneto led Italy in 2024 with 73,472,377 nights and Lazio followed with 51,753,567. Tuscany's 46,220,821 came third, at 9.92% of the national count, so almost one Italian overnight stay in ten was spent here.

At that share the regional number is a fair guide to what you'll meet, at least in the places people come for. The full table is in regions by overnight stays.

A per-resident ratio would need Tuscany's population, which isn't among the figures verified for this site, so it's left out.

Florence carries the American traffic

Florence takes 14.6% of the nights American travelers spend in Italy, second only to Rome at 25.5%. Together with Naples, Venice and Milan, those five comuni hold 60.3% of all US nights.

Concentration on that scale means the line you stand in at a Florence museum says little about a village an hour away. The pressure is real, and it's narrow.

San Gimignano: 13.88 hectares

San Gimignano's World Heritage center covers 13.88 hectares, one of the smallest listed areas in Italy, and 14 of an estimated 72 medieval towers still stand.

Every visitor to the towers walks the same 13.88 hectares, so the town's pressure is a matter of hours, not of the regional count. More on the town under San Gimignano.

Siena's tower: 25 people every 45 minutes

The Torre del Mangia takes 25 people per climb, every 45 minutes, and it can't be booked online. Tickets are sold only on the day of the visit, at the Museo Civico and Santa Maria della Scala desks, and they sell out.

That ceiling is set by the tower, not by demand, and arriving early is the whole strategy.

The Val d'Orcia is five comuni

The Val d'Orcia World Heritage site covers the historic centers and most of the territory of five comuni in the province of Siena: Castiglione d'Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d'Orcia.

Many places sold under the name lie outside that line, so check which comune a listing is actually in.

The 2024 baseline

ISTAT's 2025 count adds non-professional rentals for the first time, so a 2025 total for Tuscany would mix new beds with new visitors, and the headline number can't separate the two. Until the new series has a second year, 2024 is the comparison point.

Using 9.92% as a traveler

With 9.92% of national nights, Tuscany is where booking ahead belongs in the plan: Florence first, then the small listed towns. The Torre del Mangia is the exception, because tickets are sold only on the day.
