Sicily for roots travel: two airports

Sicily has 2 airports of comparable weight, Catania at 12,369,485³ passengers in 2025 and Palermo at 9,220,905², and picking the wrong one costs a long drive across the island.

Choose the airport by the town, not by the fare

Catania Fontanarossa handled 12,369,485³ passengers in 2025, up 0.2% on 2024, fifth in Italy. Palermo Punta Raisi, named for Falcone and Borsellino, handled 9,220,905², up 3.4%, ninth in Italy.

Catania serves the east and the south east, Palermo the west and the north coast. The island is large enough that a cheap fare into the wrong one is not a saving.

Long haul flights from North America connect through Rome or Milan in both cases, so the decision is about the last leg, not the first.

The strait, if you are coming overland

The Strait port system authority runs Messina, Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria, Milazzo, Tremestieri and Saline as one system, with its office in Messina.

Villa San Giovanni to Messina is by a wide margin the most used sea crossing for reaching Sicily by car. It is the route the motorway feeds into and the one every set of driving directions assumes.

What we could not verify from a primary source is the crossing time, the daily frequency, the operators and the passenger volumes. Those are real gaps, and any timetable you find elsewhere should be checked at the port.

17,348,238 nights, and a different visitor inside them

Sicily recorded 17,348,238⁵ overnight stays in 2024, 3.72%⁵ of the Italian total. Inside that figure sits a group with a different calendar.

In 2025, 442,000¹ American travelers came to Italy to see relatives or friends, 7.2% of the US total, staying 11.9¹ nights against 8.7 for holidaymakers, with 22.6%¹ of their nights in the south. The ledger publishes that multiple for Calabria at 25, Abruzzo at 20, Marche at 10 and Puglia at 6, and not for Sicily: no source read here states how much more often Americans come to Sicily for family than for a holiday.

In plain terms: more Americans go to Sicily for family than to any other southern region, even though the ratio is less extreme.

December and January, and what stays open

Family arrivals from the United States peak in December and January, against a general American peak in July, and 22.6%¹ of their nights fall in the south. On an island that means mild weather, empty coastal roads and towns at full population.

It also means shorter museum hours, some seasonal ferries reduced and rural accommodation closed. Book beds before you fly rather than on arrival, because the supply that exists in August is not the supply that exists in January.
