Catanzaro is reached from Lamezia Terme airport by coach in 35 to 40 minutes, with twelve weekday departures, and the town's own railway down to the sea has been running again since July 27, 2026.
Lamezia Terme: 3,049,594 passengers, and no real rival
Lamezia Terme (IATA code SUF) recorded 3,049,5941 passengers in 2025, 12.4%1 up on 2024, twentieth in the national ranking. Within Calabria there is no comparison: Reggio Calabria handled 0.981 million and Crotone 0.341 million.
Growth of over twelve percent in a year is fast for an airport this size, and it is worth reading as pressure on the ground services rather than as new capacity in the terminal.
The coach: 35 to 40 minutes, twelve times a day
Ferrovie della Calabria runs the airport link from the Catanzaro bus station in 35 to 40 minutes, with twelve departures towards Lamezia on weekdays from 5:50 am to 7:30 pm and returns from 6:50 am to 8:38 pm.
Intermediate stops include the Cittadella Regionale at Germaneto, the university and the Bivio Caraffa. Direct runs make the 35 minutes; anything routed through Germaneto takes longer, so read the column, not the average.
Two cautions from the timetable itself. Most services are weekday only, Monday to Saturday, with few Sunday runs, and many carry a school term or a no August validity, so a departure that exists in October may not exist in mid August. The PDF does not list the fare, so no price appears here.
Catanzaro to the Lido: the train came back on July 27, 2026
Ferrovie della Calabria has run fourteen trains each way between Catanzaro Piazza Matteotti and Catanzaro Lido since July 27, 2026, taking 20 to 23 minutes. From Piazza Matteotti the first is 5:16 am and the last 9:55 pm; from the Lido, 5:55 am to 10:46 pm.
Every stop between the two ends is a request stop. Stand where the crew can see you if you are getting on, and tell the conductor if you are getting off.
The road replacement service that covered the gap from January 2, 2026 is still published, and it is a different route: it starts from the FC station up in the town rather than from Piazza Matteotti, with five runs down and six back in 36 minutes. The Catanzaro Citta to Soveria Mannelli and Catanzaro Citta to Madonna di Porto sections are still marked as suspended.
The rack railway under all of this
The Ferrovie della Calabria line that climbs to Catanzaro is 950 mm5 narrow gauge, and on the urban section between Catanzaro Citta and Catanzaro Sala it runs 2.8725 kilometers on rack at a gradient of 10 percent.
The whole line runs from Cosenza to Catanzaro Lido, 1135 kilometers, and the operator also runs Cosenza to San Giovanni in Fiore, 77 kilometers, and Gioia Tauro to Palmi, 10 kilometers, serving 47 comuni in total.
That is the infrastructure, not the service. On the urban stretch the trains are currently replaced by buses, and the two facts have to be held together to make sense of a journey planner here. See Catanzaro, things to do and Calabria.
