Catanzaro: the train to the beach runs again

The train between Catanzaro and its own seafront runs again since July 27, 2026: fourteen trains each way from Piazza Matteotti to Catanzaro Lido, 20 to 23 minutes, after months in which a bus stood in for it.

Down to the Lido, fourteen times a day

Ferrovie della Calabria runs fourteen trains each way between Catanzaro Piazza Matteotti and Catanzaro Lido, in force since July 27, 2026, taking 20 to 23 minutes end to end.

From Piazza Matteotti the first is 5:16 am and the last 9:55 pm; from the Lido the first is 5:55 am and the last 10:46 pm. Everything between the two ends, from Catanzaro Pratica to Magna Grecia, is a request stop: make yourself visible on the platform, and tell the conductor if you want to get off there.

The road replacement service that covered the gap is still published, from the FC station rather than Piazza Matteotti, with five runs down and six back in 36 minutes. Two other branches, Catanzaro Città to Soveria Mannelli and Catanzaro Città to Madonna di Porto, remain suspended.

What the line underneath is

The railway underneath all this is 950 mm³ narrow gauge, and the urban section from Catanzaro Città to Catanzaro Sala covers 2.872 km³ on rack track at a gradient of 10%.

That is the whole explanation of the town's layout: the historic center is on a ridge, the beach is at sea level, and the connection between them has always needed cog wheels. The airport is Lamezia, and it is a coach ride

Ferrovie della Calabria coaches link the Catanzaro bus station to Lamezia Terme airport in 35 to 40 minutes, with 12 weekday departures toward the airport from 5:50 am to 7:30 pm and returns from 6:50 am to 8:38 pm (2026).

They also stop at the Cittadella Regionale and at the university campus at Germaneto, which is where most local traffic actually goes. Service is mainly Monday to Saturday with few Sunday runs, so a Sunday flight needs checking, or a taxi.

A Morandi bridge, and you can walk it

The Bisantis viaduct carries a single three lane carriageway 468.45⁵ meters long, 110⁵ meters above the floor of the Fiumarella valley, on a reinforced concrete arch spanning 231⁵ meters. Riccardo Morandi designed it and it was built between 1958 and 1962.

There is a footway along it, so the view down the gorge is available to anyone with a steady head, free. It was dedicated in 2001 to the memory of senator Fausto Bisantis, and locals still call it the Morandi bridge. More at things to do in Catanzaro and Catanzaro was the silk city.

Capital by law, second by size

Catanzaro had 82,708⁶ residents at January 1, 2026 on the ISTAT estimate, which makes it the capital of Calabria and the second largest municipality in the region, behind Reggio di Calabria with 167,925⁶.
