Three Italian provincial capitals cannot be reached from Rome by a train that physically arrives at their station: Campobasso, where the last leg is a replacement bus, Matera, which is not on the national network at all, and L'Aquila, where the fastest connection is a coach.
The criterion: does a train arrive, or does a bus finish the job
Three cities qualify on a single test: the national timetable returns no solution in which a train reaches their station. Not slow, not infrequent: absent. Everything else, including four changes and six hours, would keep a city off the page.
That definition matters because the booking engines hide the difference. Search Rome to Campobasso and you are shown train numbers, prices and a single itinerary, and only the small print says the last stretch is on a bus. You are buying a rail ticket for a journey that ends on a road.
Campobasso: the train stops at Boiano
Campobasso is a regional capital with zero direct trains from Rome. Every solution in the 2026 Trenitalia timetable, on both weekday dates checked, ends with a replacement bus on the Boiano to Campobasso section.
The best of them takes 3 hours 23 minutes and costs 17.751 euro, with typical regional solutions running 3 hours 23 minutes to 3 hours 48 minutes. A worked example: Roma Termini 9:07 am on Regionale 233651, Boiano around noon, bus CB6041, Campobasso 12:30 pm.
There is no high speed option at all. Frecciarossa and Italo routes that appear in a search reach Naples, Caserta or Benevento and then hand you to a bus as well. We could not find an RFI or Trenitalia page stating why the substitution exists or how long it will last, which is its own kind of answer.
Matera: a different railway entirely
Matera has no connection to the RFI national network in 2026. The city is served only by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, a narrow gauge system that does not physically join the national one, which is why no through ticket from Rome exists.
The fix is under construction. RFI is building the new Ferrandina to Matera La Martella line, 20 km of single track, electrified, at 5252 million euro partly from the national recovery plan. Design was 2019, permits and tender 2022, works started in 2023, and the line is due to open in 2028.
Until then the honest advice is to stop treating Matera as a rail destination and plan it from Bari, which is where the Appulo Lucane trains come from. The frequently repeated claim that Matera is the only Italian provincial capital off the national network is not confirmed by any official source we could read, so we do not repeat it as fact.
L'Aquila: the coach beats everything
L'Aquila has no high speed rail, and its quickest connection to Rome is a TUA coach that takes about 1 hour 25 minutes from the Collemaggio terminal to the TIBUS terminal in Rome.
There are ten departures each way on Monday to Friday and four on public holidays. The first leaves L'Aquila at 4:45 am and the last leaves Rome at 9:45 pm. A single is 13 euro in 2026, a return 20 euro, a ten-trip carnet 90 euro and a monthly pass 1603 euro, with promotional singles at 8, 9 and 10 euro.
One detail costs people their connection: TIBUS is the coach terminal next to Roma Tiburtina, not the railway station concourse. Allow the walk if you are catching a train afterwards.
Catanzaro: the local train came back, the direct one never existed
Since July 27, 2026 Ferrovie della Calabria runs Catanzaro's own line down to the sea by train again, between Piazza Matteotti and Catanzaro Lido, after most of 2026 on wheels.
Fourteen trains a day each way take 20 to 23 minutes, from 5:16 am down to 9:55 pm out of Piazza Matteotti and from 5:55 am to 10:46 pm out of the Lido. The road replacement timetable of January 2, 2026 is still published for the other end of the line, from the FC station, with five runs down and six back.
So a traveler who reaches Catanzaro Lido on a Trenitalia service can now finish the journey up into the city on a train, which was not true for most of 2026. What is still true is the reason this page exists: no direct train reaches Catanzaro from Rome at all.
Isernia proves it is not geography
Isernia, in the same region as Campobasso and smaller than it, has five direct regional trains a day from Roma Termini, taking 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 19 minutes, at 14.056 euro in 2026.
Departures from Termini are 6:15 am, 9:07 am, 1:07 pm, 2:35 pm and 8:07 pm, on the Rome to Cassino to Vairano-Caianello line. That is a cheaper, faster and simpler journey than the one to the regional capital of the same region, which tells you these gaps are decisions about lines, not facts about mountains.
Two practical consequences. If you are going to Molise without a car, base yourself in Isernia and treat Campobasso as a day trip rather than the other way round. And when a rail search shows you a single price for a journey to any of these four cities, open the itinerary and look for the word bus before you build a day around it.
