Campobasso: the train stops short, the bus finishes

No train arrives in Campobasso: in the 2026 Trenitalia timetable every itinerary from Rome finishes on a replacement bus between Boiano and Campobasso, 3 hours 23 minutes at best, for €17.75.

The last stretch is a bus, whatever the ticket says

In the 2026 timetable Trenitalia sells the Rome to Campobasso journey as a rail service, and the final leg from Boiano runs on the road. The fastest itinerary takes 3h23 and costs €17.75 in regional fare; the usual spread is 3h23 to 3h48.

A working example: Roma Termini at 9:07 am on Regionale 23365, Boiano around midday, bus CB604, Campobasso at 12:30 pm. Checked for two separate dates, September 15 and December 10, 2026, across the whole day, and no solution put a train into the city. Frecce and Italo do not serve Campobasso at all: high speed itineraries end at Naples, Caserta or Benevento and continue by coach.

Termoli and the sea, also by road

The Campobasso to Termoli link in the 2026 timetable is entirely a bus: three departures a day, at 6:00 am, 2:15 pm and 6:25 pm, taking 1h45 for €6.70. That was the picture on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Three runs means the coast is a day trip only if you accept the middle departure back. Weekend and holiday frequencies may differ, and the timetable change in December can move all three, so confirm the return before you commit to a beach afternoon.

A capital losing people

Campobasso had 47,399 residents on January 1, 2026, against 48,337 on January 1, 2020: 938 people fewer, a drop of 1.9% in six years. The intermediate reading, 47,587 at the start of 2022, shows most of the loss came early in that span.

For a traveler with family roots in Molise, this is the number behind the shuttered shops on a street your grandmother described as busy. It is also why the bus timetable above is what it is. See Molise.

Thirteen machines, and eighteen designs

Thirteen Mysteries are carried through the streets at Corpus Domini, out of 18 designed by the Campobasso sculptor Paolo Saverio di Zinno (1718-1781) in the middle of the 18th century. Six were destroyed in the earthquake of 1805, and the thirteenth was rebuilt in 1959 by the Tucci cousins, a Sacred Heart, on a drawing attributed to di Zinno.

The surviving figures are Sant'Isidoro, San Crispino, San Gennaro, Abramo, Maria Maddalena, Sant'Antonio abate, the Immacolata Concezione, San Leonardo, San Rocco, L'Assunta, San Michele, San Nicola and the Sacro Cuore. Worth stating plainly: the Campobasso Mysteries do not carry a UNESCO inscription. The 2013 listing of shoulder-borne processional machines covers four other Italian cities. More at the thirteen Mysteries.

Seeing them on an ordinary day

The Museo dei Misteri at Via Trento 3 can be visited by compulsory booking only, through the Associazione Misteri e Tradizioni at misterietradizioni.com/museo or +39 328 5556549. The association publishes no fixed opening hours and no admission price, so ask for both when you book; third party sites quote an afternoon slot and a donation, and neither is confirmed by the association.

The next parade announced is May 30, 2027, and the day runs to a timetable: mass at 8:00 am in the museum forecourt, the figures dressed at 9:00, the machines out at 9:45, the bishop's blessing at 1:00 pm, back at the museum at 1:30 pm. See things to do in Campobasso, getting there and Castello Monforte.
