Campobasso: a castle, two museums, one steep walk

Half a day in Campobasso is a climb and two ticket desks: Castello Monforte free at the top of the hill, the archaeological museum at €6 and Palazzo Pistilli at €5 below it, all three closed on Monday or open from early morning.

Castello Monforte: free, and a weather station on top

Entry to Castello Monforte costs nothing. Count Nicola II Monforte rebuilt it in 1458¹ after the earthquake of 1456¹, it was restored again in 1936 and 1937, and it is listed as a national monument.

Its main tower does a second job that few castles do: it carries an Air Force meteorological station at 808¹ meters above sea level. Look up at the aerials before you look out at the view.

The foundation date of the castle is not settled. The heritage catalogue documents the fifteenth century rebuilding, not the original construction, so this page dates the rebuilding and leaves the rest open.

Palazzo Pistilli: 180 works, €5

The Palazzo Pistilli museum holds over 180² works of art from the sixteenth to the twentieth century and opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:15 am to 7:00 pm, closed Monday, at €5 full and €2 reduced (2026). It stands on Salita San Bartolomeo, on the way up.

The core is the Michele Praitano collection, given to the state in 2014, joined by the Giovanni Eliseo donation of 2012 and the Giuseppe-Ottavio Eliseo collection. The building is a late eighteenth century townhouse, six rooms over two floors.

Six rooms is an hour, not a morning. That is a feature here: it leaves room for the second museum on the same day.

The archaeological museum: €6, and 1881

The national archaeological museum of Campobasso costs €6 full and €2 reduced in 2026 and opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, closed Monday, in Palazzo Mazzarotta on via Chiarizia.

The institution dates from 1881³ and moved into this building in 1995. Its material runs from the second millennium BC to the Middle Ages: prehistoric bronzes and amber, Samnite votive figures of Hercules, Roman finds from Sepino, and seventh century graves of Bulgar horsemen.

Those graves are the surprise of the collection, and the Roman material sends you on to the excavated town at Saepinum, half an hour away.

47,399 people, and 938 fewer than in 2020

Campobasso had 47,399⁴ residents on January 1, 2026 on the ISTAT estimate, 23,098⁴ men and 24,301⁴ women, which places it among the smallest regional capitals in the country.

The trend is the other half of the picture: 938⁵ residents lost between January 1, 2020 and January 1, 2026, down from 48,337⁵, a fall of 1.9%. This is a capital that is shrinking slowly and steadily.
