Ten days: Rome, Abruzzo, Molise, your town

Ten days, four bases, and one visit that most itineraries leave out: 442,000¹¹ Americans came to Italy in 2025 to see relatives, stayed 11.9¹¹ nights against 8.7 for holidaymakers, and this route fits that stop inside an ordinary trip.

What this itinerary does and does not cover

The trip is the subject here: how you reach a small town, what runs on which day, where the archives and the churches are, how the family stop sits between two normal travel weeks.

Citizenship by descent is not covered, on this page or anywhere on this site. The law is moving and still before the courts, and a wrong page on that subject harms real people. Ask the Italian consulate for the area where you live and note the date you asked.

All amounts here are in euros. American travelers average 9.04¹² nights in Italy across roughly three beds, so ten days on four bases is a familiar shape, not an aggressive one.

Days 1 and 2: Rome, because the flight lands there

Two nights in Rome at the start does two things: it absorbs the time difference, and it puts you at Roma Tiburtina, which is where the Abruzzo bus leaves from.

Note the station, because it is a trap. The Rome end of the L'Aquila service is the TIBUS coach terminal next to Roma Tiburtina, not the railway station itself.

Days 3 to 5: L'Aquila, 1 hour 25 minutes by bus

L'Aquila has no high speed rail: the fastest link with Rome is the TUA coach from the Collemaggio terminal to TIBUS, 1 hour 25 minutes, with 10 services each way Monday to Friday and 4 on public holidays, at €13 one way and €20 return in 2026. The first bus out of L'Aquila is 4:45 am and the last from Rome 9:45 pm.

A carnet of 10 rides is €90 and a monthly pass €160¹, with promotional fares at €8, €9 and €10. The fare page was last updated on January 21, 2026.

L'Aquila is Italian Capital of Culture for 2026, proclaimed on March 14, 2024 with the dossier "L'Aquila. Città Multiverso" and a state contribution of €1 million. That means more is open than usual in a city still rebuilding.

The other thing to see here is a road. Transhumance was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2019 on a joint Austrian, Greek and Italian nomination, and extended to ten states in 2023; the Tratturo Magno ran from L'Aquila to Foggia and its northern end lay just outside the Basilica of Collemaggio. The UNESCO record itself names neither Abruzzo nor the tratturi, so that local link comes from the regional source.

Days 6 to 8: Isernia, the one Molise town with a Rome train

Five regional trains a day run from Roma Termini to Isernia, taking 2 hours 5 to 2 hours 19 minutes at €14.05⁴ in 2026, on the Cassino and Vairano Caianello line, departing 6:15 am, 9:07 am, 1:07 pm, 2:35 pm and 8:07 pm.

Campobasso, the regional capital, has no train from Rome: in the 2026 timetable every solution ends with a replacement bus on the Boiano to Campobasso stretch, the quickest taking 3 hours 23 minutes at €17.75⁵. That is the fact that decides where you sleep in Molise.

Base in Isernia and drive or bus outwards. The region has lost 14,576⁷ residents in six years, from 300,516⁷ on January 1, 2020 to 285,940⁷ on January 1, 2026, a fall of 4.9%, and thinner population means thinner timetables and shorter counter hours at the town hall.

The three places worth a day each

Altilia Saepinum at Sepino opens every day 8:15 am to 7:15 pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and entry has been free since March 1, 2026 while works are under way; the ordinary price is €10 full and €2 reduced. Rome took the town in 293⁸ BC and what survives is a complete small city, forum, basilica, theater and four gates.

Pietrabbondante, the Samnite sanctuary at 1,000⁹ m, opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:45 am to 7:00 pm at €6 full and €2 reduced. The temple and theater were built between the late 2nd and early 1st century BC, and the theater's first three rows of stone seats have shaped backs and lion paw armrests.

At Agnone the Giovanni Paolo II bell museum, beside the Marinelli foundry, opens only for guided visits by compulsory booking at noon and 4:00 pm, €9 full and €5 for ages 6 to 18, with extra slots at 11:00 am, noon, 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm in August. It closes on Sunday afternoons.

Days 9 and 10: Termoli, and the road out

The Campobasso to Termoli connection in the 2026 Trenitalia timetable is entirely by road: 3 buses a day at 6:00 am, 2:15 pm and 6:25 pm, 1 hour 45 minutes, €6.70.

Two nights on the Adriatic at the end gives you a coastal town with a real station on the national line, which is the easiest place to leave from. It also gives a family visit time to run long without wrecking the flight home.

Going in December, and why that works

The family visit segment peaks in December and January, the two months when general American travel to Italy is at its thinnest. Relatives are at home, flights are cheaper, and the archive counters keep winter hours.

The trade off is real: shorter museum days, cold stone houses, and some of the sites above on reduced timetables. Weigh it against the fact that these towns in August are half emptied by the same people you came to see going to the coast.
