Naples: the bed tax went up on May 1, 2026

Naples raised its bed tax on May 1, 2026: it now runs €4.00 to €6.00 per person per night, and it is charged for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights to anyone over 14 who does not live in the city.

What you pay from May 1, 2026

Council decision 89 of March 12, 2026 set the current rates, effective May 1, 2026: €4.00 per person per night in a one star hotel, €4.50 at two stars, €5.50 at three stars, €6.00 at four and five stars including five star luxury, €5.50 in non hotel accommodation and €6.00 in short lets.

The spread is narrow. From the cheapest hotel to the most expensive there is €2.00 of difference a head a night, so the category of your room barely moves the bill.

Short lets sit at the top of the table alongside five star hotels. Whatever else an apartment saves you in Naples, it does not save you this.

The comparison with the winter of 2026

From January 1 to April 30, 2026 the same categories paid €3.00, €3.50, €4.50, €5.00 and €5.00 by star, with €4.50 in non hotel accommodation and €5.00 in short lets.

So a four star room went from €5.00 to €6.00 per person per night, and a short let from €5.00 to €6.00, on May 1. Any guide printed in the winter of 2026 understates a Naples stay, and the gap grows with the number of people and nights.

That is worth checking against your booking confirmation. Reservations made before the change are still charged at the rate in force on the night of the stay, not the rate quoted when you booked.

14 nights, and 14 years

The tax is due from anyone over 14 who is not resident in Naples, for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights.

Both numbers are unusual. A 14 year old pays nothing here while in many Italian cities the exemption stops earlier, and a 14 night cap is long enough that most holidays are charged in full rather than partly.

Beyond the age rule, the exemptions live in article 7 of the municipal regulation, which we have not read. This page therefore lists none, and the source for the rates themselves is a single primary page on the city's own site.

The national ceiling, and why Naples stays under it

The Italian bed tax comes from article 4 of legislative decree 23 of March 14, 2011, with an ordinary ceiling of €5.00 per night and a requirement that the charge be graduated in proportion to the price of the stay.

Naples charges €6.00 at the top, just above the ordinary ceiling and well below what the derogation for high pressure destinations would allow. The derogation applies to comuni whose tourist presences run above twenty times the resident population.
