Rome is 1 hour 13 minutes from Napoli Centrale on the fastest direct Frecciarossa, and Capodichino, with 13,271,5221 passengers in 2025, is the fourth busiest airport in Italy.
One airport, fourth in the country
Napoli Capodichino (NAP) recorded 13,271,5221 passengers in 2025, up 4.9% on 2024, which places it fourth nationally. The operator is GESAC.
Capodichino sits inside the built up area, close enough that approach and departure paths cross the city. That proximity is its selling point and its constraint at the same time.
What our sources do not carry is a verified airport transfer: no rail connection, timetable or fare for Capodichino is recorded, so this page prints none. Ask at the arrivals desk rather than trusting a figure from a third party page.
Rome in 1 hour 13, Milan in 4 hours 33
Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes 1 hour 13 minutes on the fastest direct high speed train, with a median of 1 hour 18 across 45 direct Frecciarossa and a slowest direct service of 2 hours 3 (timetable in force September 2026).
Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale takes 4 hours 33 at best, 4 hours 45 at the median, across 27 direct Frecciarossa. Both counts come from a query of the Trenitalia booking system for Tuesday September 8, 2026, direct journeys only.
Two caveats travel with those numbers. Italo runs the same corridor and its times are not verified here, and the whole timetable is rewritten in mid December. The 45 daily direct trains from Rome are what make Naples a genuine day trip in a way that Bari, with 6, is not.
The EAV L1 is the only line that reaches both excavations
From Porta Nolana and Garibaldi, the EAV L1 Naples to Sorrento line is the only Vesuvian line calling at both Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri, on the timetable in force since March 28, 2026.
The trap is that the other Vesuvian lines leave from the same platforms. L4 to Torre Annunziata and Poggiomarino, L6 to Ottaviano and Sarno, L8 from Volla to Baiano all serve the same general direction and none of them stops at the archaeological sites. Read the line number on the front of the train, not the direction.
Note also that L1 starts at Porta Nolana, not at Napoli Centrale, though it calls at Garibaldi underneath the main station. If you arrive by Frecciarossa you change downstairs, and the walk is signposted.
What EAV does not publish
There is no published fare and no published frequency for the Vesuvian lines on any EAV page we could open: fare queries are redirected to the Unico Campania system, which does not display prices on screen.
So this page carries no ticket price and no train every X minutes claim for the Vesuvian lines. Journey times and actual reliability are equally unverified on a primary source, and we would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a number from a blog.
The one contact the operator does publish is a freephone information line, 8004 2113884. In July 2026 EAV published a reworking of the replacement bus services on the Naples to Baiano line, which is a reminder that these lines run substitutions more often than the headline timetable suggests.
