Palermo: nine listed monuments, three towns apart

The Arab-Norman World Heritage site is 9 monuments inscribed in 2015, and only seven of them are in Palermo: the other two are the cathedrals at Cefalù and at Monreale, which is a separate town with separate tickets.

Nine monuments, and where they are

The serial site called Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral churches of Cefalù and Monreale was inscribed on July 3, 2015 under criteria (ii) and (iv). Seven components are in the city: two palaces, the Royal Palace with the Palatine Chapel and the Zisa; three churches, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio known as the Martorana, and San Cataldo; the cathedral; and the Admiral's Bridge.

All of it belongs to one political moment, the Norman kingdom of Sicily between 1130¹ and 1194¹, when Greek, Latin and Arabic craft worked on the same buildings. That is the through line, and it is why the mosaics at Monreale and the muqarnas ceiling of the Palatine Chapel belong to the same story.

The Royal Palace closes early, especially on Sunday

Last entry at the Royal Palace with the Palatine Chapel is 4:30 pm Monday to Saturday and 12:30 pm on Sundays and public holidays, and the site is run by the Fondazione Federico II. It closes on December 25 and January 1.

Tickets are €19 full, €17 reduced for EU visitors aged 18 to 25 and for teachers, €15.50² for EU over 65s and €11 for ages 14 to 17, with an audio guide at €5 (September 2026). Prices in euros. Monreale sells the church and the cloister separately

The cathedral, including the Roano chapel, the terraces, the exhibition rooms and the diocesan museum, costs €6, the Benedictine cloister costs €6 on its own, and the combined ticket is €12, with an audio guide at €5.

The cloister opens Monday to Saturday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Sunday and holidays 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing (2026). The abbey was founded in 1174³ by the Norman king William II, and the cloister is the part people underestimate, which is the argument for the €12 ticket rather than the cheap one.

Eight thousand bodies, sorted by profession

The Capuchin catacombs began in 1599⁴ under the friars' convent and hold an estimated 8,000⁴ embalmed bodies, arranged by sex, social class and profession along the corridors. Mummification took 8 to 12 months.

The last burial, in 1920, was Rosalia Lombardo, a two year old girl in a glass case, and she is what most people come to see. Be clear about two things before you go: it is a burial place, not an exhibit, and it is not accessible to visitors with mobility or sight impairments.

Ballarò, from 7:30 am

The oldest and largest of the historic markets runs Monday to Saturday from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm, with Sunday trade mostly in the morning, and it costs nothing to walk in. It stretches from Piazza Casa Professa to the bastions of corso Tukory and dates back to the Arab period.

What it sells is fruit, vegetables, fish and meat, for people cooking dinner, which is why the early hours are the honest ones. The other historic markets are the Vucciria, the Capo, the Lattarini and the flea market. See getting to Palermo.

Fitting Palermo into a two week trip

American travelers average 9.04⁶ nights in Italy but only 2.92⁶ nights per property, with 1.19⁶ secondary destinations declared, so the typical trip changes bed roughly three times across 2.2 places on average. Palermo does not slot into that pattern cheaply.

Between the seven city monuments, Monreale up the hill and Cefalù along the coast, the listed site alone absorbs three days. Either give Sicily its own base or accept that you will see the Palatine Chapel and nothing else. See Sicily.
