Ballarò is the oldest and largest of Palermo's historic markets, open Monday to Saturday from 7:30 am to 8 pm and mostly on Sunday mornings, with free entry.
7:30 am to 8 pm, six days a week
Ballarò trades Monday to Saturday from 7:30 am to 8 pm (07:30 to 20:00 on Italian signs), and on Sunday mostly in the morning.
No ordinance sets those hours. They're the ones the City of Palermo publishes on its tourism portal, so treat them as the market's rhythm rather than a promise from every stall.
Sunday is the day to be careful with. "Mostly the morning" is all the City says, with no closing time, so go early if Sunday is your only chance.
Where it runs
The market stretches from Piazza Casa Professa to the bastions of Corso Tukory, and there's nothing to pay to walk through it.
It goes back to the period of Arab rule, and the City describes it as the oldest and the most extensive of Palermo's historic markets.
What's on the stalls
Four things dominate: fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. It's a grocery market before it's anything else.
If you're cooking in a rented apartment, this is the useful place to shop. If you want souvenirs, the City's description gives you no reason to expect them here.
Palermo's four other historic markets are the Vucciria, the Capo, the Lattarini and the flea market.
Pairing it with the Capuchin Catacombs
The Catacombs open every day from 9 am to 12:30 pm, last entry 12:10 pm, and from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, last entry 5:10 pm, and a ticket costs €5 (2026).
That midday break shapes the day: the market first thing and the catacombs late morning, or the catacombs after 3 pm and the market's last hours before 8 pm.
The two official sources disagree on the catacombs. The operator's site gives the split hours above, while the City's page gives 9 am to 5:30 pm without a break. The operator's version is the one used here, and the €5 price appears only on the City's page.
For the rest of the city, see Palermo, the Capuchin Catacombs and Sicily.
