Tropea: a clifftop town that fills up in July

Tropea is a comune of 5,668² residents on a rock above the Tyrrhenian that declared 109,552¹ overnight stays in July 2026 and 1,619¹ in January, so the month you choose decides which town you find.

When to go: read the monthly curve

In 2026 Tropea declared 1,619¹ overnight stays in January, 2,703¹ in February, 4,988¹ in March, 25,178¹ in April, 71,614¹ in May, 97,681¹ in June and 109,552¹ in July. The seven months add up to 315,509¹ nights from 94,890¹ guests, with declarations updated to August 24, 2026.

The jump comes in April, when the figure multiplies fivefold on March, and by June the town is already close to its July level. If you want Tropea open but not full, April and May are the months the numbers point to.

August isn't in the series, because it hadn't been declared when the report was produced. So the busiest month of the year is the one missing from the table, and July is a floor, not the peak.

Figures that undercount

The 315,509¹ nights are declarations for the tourist tax, not presences measured by the regional observatory. They leave out residents and any accommodation that failed to file, so the real presence is higher.

For choosing your dates that doesn't matter much. The same rule applies to every month, so the shape of the year is reliable even where the totals aren't.

The town on the rock

The old town stands on a rock the comune puts at about 60 metres, sheer above the Tyrrhenian, on the Costa degli Dei in the province of Vibo Valentia. The height is the comune's own figure, not a surveyed measurement.

The tourist tax, still at 2025 rates

Tropea charges €1 per night per star in hotels and holiday villages, €2 per night in rooms-to-let and B&Bs, and €1.50 per night in other lodgings, from campsites and agriturismi to holiday homes, hostels and boats moored in the port. It applies for at most 15 consecutive nights, and children under 12 are exempt.

These are the 2025 rates, set by the resolution of October 23, 2024, which confirmed rates in force since 2022. No 2026 resolution had been published by September 1, 2026, so treat them as the latest published rather than this year's.

An onion named after the town

The Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria has been an IGP since EU regulation 284⁴/2008 of March 27, 2008, for three types: the spring onion, the fresh onion and the storage onion. The name is the town's, but the growing zone covers comuni in the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia.

Getting there

Lamezia Terme, IATA code SUF, is Calabria's main airport, with 3,049,594⁵ passengers in 2025, up 12.4%⁵ on 2024. The onward train or bus from Lamezia to Tropea isn't in the data verified for this page, so check it before you book an evening landing.
