Buonconsiglio: the castle ticket, then the tower slot

The Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento costs €10 and opens Tuesday to Sunday, but the Cycle of the Months in Torre Aquila needs a separate €2.50 slot with museum staff, and the castle ticket must be bought at least 45 minutes before it.

€10, closed on Mondays

The full ticket is €10, over 65s pay €8, ages 15 to 26 pay €6, and under 14s go free. The castle opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm from May to October and 9:30 am to 5 pm from November to April, at Via Bernardo Clesio 5.

It closes on Mondays that are not public holidays, and on December 25. On the third Friday of each month there is an evening opening.

One gap to know about: the price list does not say which year it applies to. The figures above are the current ones on the castle's page, and nothing more precise is claimed.

Torre Aquila: 45-minute slots, €2.50 more

Entry to the Cycle of the Months in Torre Aquila costs €2.50 on top of the castle ticket and runs only with museum staff, at fixed times every 45 minutes, with limited places. It can't be visited freely.

The castle ticket has to be bought at least 45 minutes before the slot you choose, and booking is recommended. So the order is fixed: castle ticket first, then the tower slot, then the rest of the castle while you wait for it.

The prince-bishops' castle, and the Council of Trent

The Council of Trent met in the city between 1545³ and 1563³, in 25 sessions over three periods, while the Buonconsiglio was the residence of the prince-bishops who ruled Trento.

The sessions were held in two churches: the cathedral of San Vigilio and, from 1562³, Santa Maria Maggiore, because by then the participants no longer fit in the cathedral.

Missing from the national museum rankings

Trentino-Alto Adige is one of three regions absent from the Ministry of Culture's 2024 survey of state cultural sites, with Valle d'Aosta and Sicily.

The likely reason is that heritage there is run by the regions or the autonomous provinces rather than the state, though the survey itself doesn't say so. For a visitor, it means the national free-Sunday scheme is no guide here: the castle's own list, as recorded, gives free entry to under 14s and no free Sunday.
