Ten winter days in the south, built around family

Ten nights for a family visit in the south, Naples 2, the family town in Calabria 6 and Reggio Calabria 2, timed for December or January, which is when Americans who come to see relatives arrive and most other visitors don't.

Who this route is for

In 2025, 442,000 American travelers came to Italy to visit relatives or friends, 7.2% of all American travelers, and they stayed 11.9 nights against 8.7 for holidaymakers.

They go where holiday traffic doesn't: 25 times more often than a holidaymaker to Calabria and 20 times more often to Abruzzo. And they come in December and January, not in August.

This route covers the trip only. For anything about citizenship, the consulate that serves your home address is the only source to trust, and it's worth writing down the day you asked. Prices here are in euros.

Why winter, in numbers

American travel as a whole leans to summer, with 39.7% of nights between June and August and a peak in July, but 25.1% fall in the low season.

The family visitor sits inside that low season share: December and January are the family months. You'll be traveling against the flow of every other kind of American visitor.

Five national public holidays land in this window: December 8, 25 and 26, and January 1 and 6. Offices and many businesses close or cut hours on those days, including the municipal counters you may want for family records, so keep those days for the family. See public holidays.

Days 1 and 2: Naples, the arrival airport

Naples Capodichino handled 13,271,522 passengers in 2025, up 4.9% on 2024, the fourth busiest airport in Italy and the biggest one on this route.

Two nights here absorb the time difference before the family part starts. The National Archaeological Museum is open Wednesday to Monday, 9:00 am to 7:30 pm, last entry 6:30 pm, and closed on Tuesdays.

A full ticket is €20.00, €2.00 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, and under 18s go free; so does everyone on the first Sunday of the month. See Naples and roots travel in Campania.

Days 3 to 8: the family town

Calabria has 404 comuni and 1,827,571 residents, and not one of those towns reaches 200,000 people; Reggio di Calabria, the largest, has 167,925.

Six nights here is the core of the trip, and it's still short of the 11.9 nights that family visitors average. If the house has room, the rest of this route bends around it, not the other way.

In January 2026 Tropea logged 1,619 overnight stays for its tourist tax, against 109,552 in July. On the coast, winter means shutters, which is worth knowing if the family suggests a night at the sea. See Tropea lives in seven months.

How you reach the town from Naples isn't covered by a verified timetable: no train time for Naples to Calabria is in the data this route uses. Check the Trenitalia planner and the regional bus operator for the last stretch. More in roots travel in Calabria.

If the family town is in Molise

Between January 1, 2020 and January 1, 2026 Molise went from 300,516 residents to 285,940, a loss of 14,576 people, or 4.9%.

Fewer people means thin winter timetables, so confirm the opening days of any municipal office before you travel to it. The Molise version of this trip runs through Rome instead of Naples: see ten days in Abruzzo and Molise and Molise is emptying.

Days 9 and 10: Reggio Calabria, and the flight home

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, home of the Riace Bronzes, opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, last entry 7:30 pm, and closes on Mondays.

A full ticket is €10, €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, and free under 18. From 6:00 pm (18:00 on the signs) the MArRC Slim ticket costs €5.

Sicily is 20 minutes away. The Blu Jet fast boat crosses from Villa San Giovanni to Messina with 16 departures a day each way, at €2.50 one way and €4.50 same day return in 2026. Villa San Giovanni is a separate town, around 14 km from the city.

Fly home from Lamezia Terme, the main Calabrian airport, which handled 3,049,594 passengers in 2025, up 12.4% on 2024. See Reggio Calabria.

Two closing days to plan around

Two closing days shape this route: Tuesday at the Naples archaeological museum and Monday in Reggio.

Put the museum mornings on the other days and give the family everything else. In December the days are short, and a museum that's shut on the one free morning you had is the easiest mistake to avoid.

FAQ

Is December a good time for a family trip to southern Italy?

It's the time family visitors actually choose. In 2025, 442,000 Americans came to see relatives or friends, most of them in December and January, and stayed 11.9 nights against 8.7 for holidaymakers. The coast is quiet then: Tropea logged 1,619 stays in January 2026.

How do I visit my ancestors' village in Calabria without a car?

By train to the nearest station and a regional bus from there, confirmed on the day you travel: no verified train or bus timetable for Calabrian villages sits behind this route. Lamezia Terme is the region's main airport, with 3,049,594 passengers in 2025.

Which public holidays fall in a December or January trip?

Five national ones: December 8, 25 and 26, and January 1 and 6. Public offices and many businesses close or cut hours on those days, so don't plan a visit to a town hall on them.

Can this itinerary help with Italian citizenship?

No. This site covers the trip and nothing about citizenship requirements, because the law is changing and still in the courts. Ask the Italian consulate that serves your home address, and keep a note of the day you asked.

How do I get from Reggio Calabria to Sicily?

By the Blu Jet fast boat from Villa San Giovanni to Messina: 20 minutes, 16 departures a day each way, €2.50 one way and €4.50 same day return in 2026. Villa San Giovanni is a separate port, not Reggio's own harbor.
