Naples Capodichino handled 13,271,5222 passengers in 2025, fourth in Italy, and it is the practical starting point for a Campanian family visit because it sits inside the city rather than an hour outside it.
The one southern region that is also a tourist region
Campania recorded 21,369,4623 overnight stays in 2024, 4.58%3 of the Italian total, which puts it in a different category from the other roots destinations.
That changes the trip in two ways. Accommodation, trains and car hire are abundant, unlike in Molise or inland Calabria; and prices in the coastal belt follow international demand rather than local demand.
A family town in the interior, an hour from the coast, will feel like a different country from Sorrento in July. Both are Campania.
Arriving: the airport, or the train from Rome
Naples Capodichino handled 13,271,5222 passengers in 2025, up 4.9% on the year before, and ranks fourth among Italian airports. Its position inside the urban area is the reason it beats flying to Rome for this specific trip.
If you are flying into Rome anyway, Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes 1 hour 13 minutes on the fastest direct high speed service, with a median of 1 hour 18 and 45 direct Frecciarossa runs on a September 2026 weekday. That is a morning, not a travel day.

The local line, and what it does not publish
EAV line L1, Naples to Sorrento, leaves from Porta Nolana and Garibaldi and is the only Vesuvian line serving both Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. The current timetable dates from March 28, 2026.
The other Vesuvian lines are L4 to Poggiomarino, L6 to Sarno and L8 to Baiano. What EAV does not publish on any readable page is the fare between two stations or the real frequency, and in July 2026 it reissued replacement bus arrangements on the Naples to Baiano line.
If the family town sits on one of those lines, allow more time than the map implies and keep the freephone number 8005 2113885.
The season, and the arithmetic of a long stay
The 442,0001 US travelers who came to see relatives or friends in 2025 stayed 11.91 nights each against 8.7 for holidaymakers, and 22.6%1 of their nights fell in the south.
Their arrivals peak in December and January, the two thinnest months of the general American calendar. In Campania that means a coast without queues, shorter museum hours and a family that is actually at home.
This site does not deal with the requirements for citizenship by descent, and that includes this page. The law changed in 2025 and is still before the courts; ask the Italian consulate covering your area of residence and record the date of the answer.
