Seven days in Puglia and Matera, by train

Three bases in seven nights, Bari 2, Matera 2, Lecce 3, on three verified rail connections and one regional capital that the national network does not reach at all.

Fly in, do not train in

Rome Termini to Bari Centrale takes 4 hours 14 minutes on the fastest direct Frecciarossa, with a median of 4 hours 23 and only 6 direct services on the weekday sampled in September 2026. The route has no continuous high speed line, which is an inference from those times and frequencies rather than a figure published by the network operator.

American travelers average 9.04 nights in Italy but 2.92 per property, changing beds roughly three times across about 2.2 places. This route is built for exactly that pattern: three beds, seven nights, no repeated packing.

All fares and tickets here are quoted in euros.

Days 1 and 2: Bari, and a bus to a castle

Castel del Monte cannot be driven to: you park on the SS 170 and take a paid shuttle up to the walls. Without a car, take the train to Andria and then the ASA number 6 bus, which runs daily from April 1 to November 1 and at weekends only the rest of the year.

Departures are 9:00 am, 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, with returns at 2:30 pm, 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm, and the monument's own page refers you back to the operator for current times. The nearest airport is Bari Palese, 45 km away.

The shuttle fare from the car park is not published anywhere we could read, so budget for it without knowing the amount.

Day 3: Alberobello, 1,500 roofs on 10.52 hectares

The trulli of Alberobello have been World Heritage since 1996 under criteria (iii), (iv) and (v), on a protected area of 10.52 hectares covering Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola and over 1,500 buildings.

Two Italian public bodies agree on the year, the criteria, the count and the districts. The original UNESCO record is behind a block that returns errors to every automated request, and the buffer zone is not stated on the pages we read.

Treat this as a half day between Bari and Matera rather than a base.

Days 4 and 5: Matera, on the only line that goes there

In 2026 Matera still has no link to the national railway network. The city runs on the narrow gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane alone, and a new 20 km electrified single track from Ferrandina to Matera La Martella, costing €525 million with part of the funding from the EU recovery plan, has been under construction since 2023 for a 2028 opening.

On the existing line, the 2024 to 2033 contract between the Basilicata region and FAL sets the direct Bari to Matera run at 1 hour 25 minutes against a previous 1 hour 42, funds 5 battery trains for the Matera metropolitan service and schedules a Sunday service from September 2026. That 1 hour 25 is a contractual target announced in December 2023, not a timetable we have watched operate.

Works interrupt this line regularly: the Bari Centrale to Grumo Appula section reopened on August 31, 2026 after a summer of replacement buses. Check service notices the week you travel.

The Sassi and the rock church park were listed in 1993 under criteria (iii), (iv) and (v), over a core zone of 1,016 hectares with a buffer zone of 4,365.

Days 6 and 7: Lecce, on a 15 day ticket

LeccEcclesiae costs €11 full, €5 for ages 12 to 17 and €24 for a family of 2 adults plus children aged 12 to 17, and it stays valid 15 days with one entry per site. Worshippers entering to pray, residents of the diocese and under 12s go free.

That validity is the useful part: the circuit does not have to be done in one march. Buy at Piazza del Duomo 5, at the Santa Croce ticket office or online, and be aware that other prices circulate online while the operator's own page says €11.

The Roman amphitheater in Piazza Sant'Oronzo is separate, €5 full and €2 reduced, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm from October to March and 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm from April to September. In August the morning visitor finds it visible from above and shut.

Getting back north from Lecce

Bari Centrale to Lecce takes 1 hour 41 to 1 hour 43 on the Regionale Veloce at a base fare of €13.20, and 1 hour 25 on the Frecciarossa at a base fare of €14.90, on times and fares checked for September 15, 2026.

Night Intercity services on the same stretch take 1 hour 56 to 2 hours 50. The Frecciarossa fare moves with availability; the regional one does not, which makes it the predictable choice for a return with luggage.
