The fastest direct high-speed train from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella takes 1 hour 35 minutes, with a median of 1 hour 41 and 48 direct Frecciarossa on an ordinary weekday (September 2026).

3 numbers, not 1

The fastest direct service is 1 hour 35. The median direct Frecciarossa is 1 hour 41. The slowest is 1 hour 57. A 22-minute spread on a 95-minute journey is small in absolute terms and large as a share, and it decides whether a morning in Florence starts at 9:30 or at 10:15.

All three come from a direct query to the Trenitalia sales system for Tuesday, September 8, 2026, counting only solutions with no change. That is one operator's own data, not an independent measurement, and the Italian timetable changes in mid-December.

48 trains is the real advantage

48 direct Frecciarossa on a weekday is a train every 20 to 30 minutes for most of the day. No other Italian city pair in our fact set runs this dense, and the density changes how you plan rather than how fast you travel.

It means you can buy for a time and change your mind, at a price. It means a missed connection at Termini costs half an hour, not a day. And it means the argument for renting a car on this leg is close to zero.

You arrive inside a limited traffic zone

The whole historic center of Florence is a ZTL, divided into 5 sectors, A, B, O, F and G. In A, B and O it is active all year, 7:30 am to 8:00 pm (07:30 to 20:00) Monday to Friday and 7:30 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, with plate-reading cameras at every gate and some gates reserved 24 hours a day for buses and emergency vehicles.

A summer night ZTL runs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October. The indicative hours, 11:00 pm to 3:00 am, come from a municipal page referring to a previous year, and the hours for sectors F and G are not reconfirmed on a primary source. Arriving at Santa Maria Novella on foot sidesteps the entire question.

Book the Uffizi and the dome, not the train

The Uffizi charges 25 euro for a same-day ticket and 29 euro if you book ahead, which is the counterintuitive part: booking costs more, not less. Reduced entry is 2 euro, and since January 2026 an afternoon ticket after 4:00 pm costs 16 euro. The Uffizi with the Vasari Corridor is 43 euro same day, 47 euro booked.

The Duomo complex sells no single tickets, only 3 cumulative passes: Brunelleschi at 30 euro, Giotto at 20 euro, Ghiberti at 15 euro, with children 7 to 14 at 12, 7 and 5 euro and under 6s free. The dome climb exists only inside the Brunelleschi Pass. Groups of 11 or more pay a 70 euro surcharge at the Uffizi, and the first Sunday of the month is free there.
