Venice access fee: how the rules worked

Nothing is payable to enter Venice as of September 2, 2026, and the rules described below are the ones that would have to be reactivated by a new city resolution before anyone owes anything again.

The status, with the date attached

The comune declared the 2026 trial concluded and from July 27, 2026 no payment and no exemption obligation applies. A future year requires a new resolution of the giunta comunale, and none has been published.

That sentence needs its date because it is a moving fact, and because the version of it circulating online is out of date rather than wrong: the charge existed, on listed days, in 3 consecutive seasons. This page carries a check date for exactly that reason.

The regulation nobody reads

The regulatory text was approved by council resolution 190² of September 16, 2025. It is the instrument that defines who pays, who does not, how payment is proved and what happens if it is not, and it is separate from the yearly decisions on price and calendar.

Payment ran through a multilingual portal, cda.ve.it, which issued a QR code to be shown at checkpoints. That design has a consequence worth keeping in mind if it returns: the thing checked was the code, not the money, which is why the exempt also needed to register.

The exemptions were not the same as being ignored

5 categories were exempt or excluded: residents of the comune, employees and self-employed people entering for work, students at schools and universities of the old city, owners paying municipal property tax in the comune, and anyone staying in registered accommodation and recorded on the portal.

That last one is the item English-language coverage got wrong most often. Sleeping in the city removed the payment, not the registration, and the two were separate steps. The published exemption list is partial: the full text is annexed to resolution 190²/2025 and we have not read it.

25 to 150 euro, plus the 10

The administrative penalty ran from 25 to 150² euro, with a further 10 euro charged as the contribution due. So the worst case was 160 euro for something whose advance price was 5 euro.

The gap between those two numbers is the whole argument for registering rather than gambling, if the scheme is revived. It is also the reason the 5 euro and 10 euro tiers existed: 5 euro up to the fourth-to-last day before the visit and 10 euro in the days immediately before, applied between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm on the days in the calendar.

The Venice rule that is still live

Guided tourist groups may not exceed 25 people, and guides may not use loudspeakers or stop in places that obstruct pedestrian flow. This came into force in August 2024, and 3 fines were issued on the first day of application. School groups on educational visits and boarding or disembarking operations are outside the limit.

Two honesty notes on that one. The official municipal pages returned errors on every URL tried, so the source is dated trade press. The fine amount and the extension of the rule to Murano, Burano and Torcello appear in search snippets and were not verified on an open page, so neither appears here.
