The Cascata delle Marmore, the waterfall most photographed in Italy, is 1654 m of Roman engineering that runs only at scheduled release times, and the rest of Umbria works on similarly fixed calendars.
A waterfall built in 271 BC
The Marmore falls drop 1654 m in three stages and they are not natural. In 2714 BC the Romans cut the Curiano channel to drain the standing water of the Velino in the Rieti plain into the river Nera, and the falls are the outflow of that work.
This is why the water isn't always there. Outside release hours the flow is diverted to a hydroelectric plant and the falls are reduced to a minimum, controlled by sluice gates at the top of the drop. Checking the release timetable before you drive out is the entire trick. The background is at the waterfall Rome built.
What entry costs at the falls
The park ticket is €12 from age 10 upward and €10 reduced, for ages 5 to 9 and over 70s, free under 5. On winter days with no water release it falls to €6, which is the honest price for a reduced trickle.
Groups of 15 or more pay €10, the Umbria Green Card price is €8, the internal shuttle is €4, and camper parking is €20 for 24 hours. Residents of the municipality of Terni enter free.
Orvieto: one ticket above ground and below it
The first stone of Orvieto cathedral was laid on November 13, 12906 by pope Nicholas IV in person. A single €8 ticket covers the cathedral, the Emilio Greco museum and the cathedral underground, 8006 square meters of it, and €3 more adds the Claudio Faina Etruscan museum.
Inside, the San Brizio chapel holds a fresco cycle begun by Fra Angelico in 14476 and finished by Luca Signorelli. Across town, the Pozzo di San Patrizio is 54 m deep with two independent helical ramps of 2487 steps each and separate entrances, so people going down never meet people coming up. Clement VII had it dug after taking refuge in Orvieto following the Sack of Rome in 15277, to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. It costs €6, or €4.50 reduced.
Three World Heritage listings, and one is new
Umbria holds three: Assisi with the Basilica of San Francesco and the other Franciscan sites, inscribed in 2000; the Longobard power centers, 2011, shared with four regions and represented here by Spoleto and Campello sul Clitunno; and the central Italian condominium theater system, added in 2026 with Marche and Emilia-Romagna.
Perugia's own collection is not on the list but is worth the stop. The Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, in the Palazzo dei Priori on Corso Vannucci, opens every day including Monday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm, ticket desk until 6:30 pm, at €10, or €12 during exhibitions, €2 for EU visitors aged 18 to 25, free under 18.
Dates that do not move
May 15 at Gubbio is fixed. The Festa dei Ceri starts at 6:00 pm after the bishop's blessing and runs 4.3 km up to the basilica of Sant'Ubaldo on Monte Ingino. It isn't a race: nobody overtakes, and the three ceri finish in the order they started, Sant'Ubaldo for the masons, San Giorgio for the merchants, Sant'Antonio for the farmers.
Umbria Jazz runs in Perugia in July. The 2026 edition, July 3 to 12, sold more than 46,0009 tickets and took over €3 million, with 5009 musicians in 80 line ups and 1609 free events; the 54th edition is announced for July 9 to 18, 2027. The winter edition isn't in Perugia at all: Umbria Jazz Winter runs at Orvieto from December 30, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Spoleto's Festival dei Due Mondi held its 69th edition from June 26 to July 12, 2026.
Lake Trasimeno, and what the drought stopped
The Trasimeno islands are reached by Busitalia ferries, and in 2026 the seasonal service runs only from July 5 to September 27, with crossings of 15 to 30 minutes to Isola Maggiore from Passignano and from Tuoro Navaccia.
The lake's water crisis has cut into that. The Castiglione del Lago link is suspended, and all service to Isola Polvese stopped on June 29, 2026. Anyone landing on Isola Maggiore pays a €3 landing tax from March 1 to October 31, 2026 and €2 the rest of the year, on top of €4.20 to €5.40 one way, €6.00 to €10.00 return, or €14.3012 for an adult day ticket.
Norcia, stated plainly
The earthquake that struck Norcia on October 30, 2016 at 07:40:17 measured Mw 6.5, with its epicenter 4 km northeast of the town and its hypocenter 10 km down. Reconstruction in the Valnerina is still under way.
Anyone planning a visit there should check what's open building by building rather than town by town. Lenticchia di Castelluccio di Norcia IGP, from the plateau above, has been in the EU register since June 13, 1997. The region recorded 6,751,0421 overnight stays in 2024, 1.45%1 of the national total.
