Basilicata's flagship protected food is the Pane di Matera IGP, in the EU register since February 22, 2008, and its newest name is the Fragola della Basilicata IGP, registered on October 29, 2025.
Pane di Matera: an IGP since February 22, 2008
The bread of Matera became an IGP through Commission regulation 1602/2008, published in the EU Official Journal on February 22, 2008, in the bakery and pastry category. The application had been published for objections on June 9, 2007, and none was filed.
The agriculture ministry's list, updated to June 11, 2026, names it as the region's flagship product.
We haven't read the product specification, so what it requires of the flour, the leavening and the shape isn't described here. Those details are worth reading at the source rather than secondhand.
Senise peppers: registered in 1996
Peperoni di Senise IGP, the peppers sold as peperoni cruschi, entered the EU register on July 2, 1996, twelve years before the bread. The ministry gives them as Basilicata's other flagship product.
Their growing area and harvest season aren't among the figures verified for this site. Senise, the comune in the name, is the obvious place to ask.
A strawberry IGP from October 2025
Fragola della Basilicata was registered as an IGP by Commission implementing regulation 2025/22393 of October 29, 2025, published in the Official Journal on November 5, 2025. It came into force on the twentieth day after publication, under the EU's regulation 2024/11433 on geographical indications.
It is the most recent Basilicata name to enter the EU register. The registration act does not state the production zone or the volumes, so neither is given here.
One DOCG wine
Basilicata holds one DOCG wine on the ministry's 2026 count, the same as Sicily, Calabria and Sardinia, against 19 in Piedmont and 79 nationally.
The ministry's list names it. The figures verified for this site record only the count, so the name is left out rather than guessed.
What to eat, and where
Pane di Matera is the product you'll find without looking, because the name is the town's. For the town itself see Matera and the Sassi.
For the region, see Basilicata and nature and parks in Basilicata. The rules behind the labels are under DOP and IGP.
