The fastest direct high-speed train from Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale takes 4 hours 33 minutes, with a median of about 4 hours 45 across 27 direct Frecciarossa on a weekday (September 2026).
4h33, 4h45, 5h53
The fastest direct service takes 4 hours 33 minutes, the median about 4 hours 45, and the slowest direct train 5 hours 53. That is 27 direct Frecciarossa on the weekday sampled, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, counted in Trenitalia's own sales system.
An 80-minute spread on a trip of four and a half hours is the reason to sort by duration before price. The figures are one operator's own data, with no independent confirmation, and they hold for the timetable in force until mid-December 2026.
A morning on the train
At 4 hours 33 minutes at best, this is a morning on the train, which changes what you can do on arrival more than it changes what you pay. Leave Milan early and you reach Naples with the afternoon still free.
That afternoon is the one to protect, because the two most useful Naples bookings are both time-bound: the tourist tax changes the hotel bill, and the Cappella Sansevero runs on booked entries. The city's other arrivals are on getting to Naples.
Naples' tourist tax since May 1, 2026
Naples raised its tourist tax from May 1, 2026, under city council resolution 89 of March 12, 2026. It is due per person per night from anyone over 14 not resident in Naples, for up to 14 consecutive nights:
- 1-star hotels: 4.00 euro
- 2-star hotels: 4.50 euro
- 3-star hotels and other non-hotel accommodation: 5.50 euro
- 4 and 5-star hotels, and short-term rentals: 6.00 euro
Until April 30, 2026 every one of those categories paid 1.00 euro less. Two people in a 3-star hotel for four nights now pay 44.00 euro. Exemptions sit in article 7 of the municipal regulation, which we have not read, so ask the property. Other cities are on the tourist tax page.
Book the Cappella Sansevero before the train
The Cappella Sansevero, home of the Veiled Christ, can be visited only with a booking. Online tickets open 60 days before the date, and a further batch is released 2 days before.
It opens every day except Tuesday, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, and a full ticket costs 12.00 euro (2026). Book the slot, then pick a train that lands you with time to spare; a Tuesday arrival rules it out altogether. The rest of the city is on the Naples page.
