Rome to Naples takes 1 hour 13 minutes on the fastest direct high-speed train, 1 hour 18 on the median, with 45 direct Frecciarossa on an ordinary weekday (September 2026).

The shortest high-speed leg in the country

1 hour 13 minutes between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale is the fastest direct service, against a median of 1 hour 18 and a slowest direct of 2 hours 3 minutes. That last figure is the one to watch: the spread here is 50 minutes, far wider in proportion than on the northern routes.

The second train is the hard part

The EAV L1 line from Naples to Sorrento is the only one of the Vesuvian lines that stops at both Ercolano Scavi and Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri. It leaves from Porta Nolana and from Garibaldi, next to Napoli Centrale, on a timetable in force since March 28, 2026.

What EAV does not publish is the part you need. No point to point fare and no real frequency appear on its pages, which redirect to a fare engine that shows no prices either. So this page gives you the line and the stations and stops there, and the operator answers on 800² 211388².

Pompeii rations the day by half

From April 1 to October 31 the park splits its 20,000³ daily ceiling into 15,000³ tickets for 9:00 am to noon and 5,000³ for noon to 5:30 pm. A traveler leaving Rome at 9:00 arrives into the smaller half of that split, and the smaller half is 3 times smaller.

Since November 15, 2024 the ticket carries your name and an ID check happens at the gate. The rule followed days above 36,000³ visitors on a site that had taken more than 4 million in a year. Book the morning band and take the earliest Frecciarossa, or accept the afternoon and treat Pompeii as half a day.

Naples between trains: 20.00 euro, closed Tuesday

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale is the other half of Pompeii, because most of what was portable is in it. Open Wednesday to Monday, 9:00 am to 7:30 pm (09:00 to 19:30), last entry 6:30 pm, closed Tuesday, at 20.00 euro full and 2.00 euro reduced for EU citizens aged 18 to 25.

10.00 euro with the Artecard, free for under 18s and on the first Sunday of the month. Some rooms are closed for works, which the museum states on its own page. A Tuesday day trip from Rome should go to the excavations rather than the museum, and that is the single scheduling fact that decides the direction of the day.
