Puglia for roots travel: fly, then train

Why the train from Rome is the wrong instinct

Roma Termini to Bari Centrale runs in 4 hours 14 minutes at best, with a median of 4 hours 23, a slowest direct of 4 hours 41, and just 6 direct Frecciarossa services on the weekday sampled in September 2026.

The reason is that the route has no continuous high speed line. That conclusion is drawn from the journey times and the thin frequency rather than from a published network map, so treat it as an inference we are stating openly.

Bari Karol Wojtyla handled 7,977,881² passengers in 2025, up 9.7% on 2024, tenth in Italy. For anyone coming from the United States the sensible shape is a long haul flight to Rome or Milan and a short connection south, not four hours on rails with luggage.

Once you are here, the coast line does the work

Bari Centrale to Lecce takes 1 hour 41 to 1 hour 43 on the Regionale Veloce at a base fare of €13.20⁴, and 1 hour 25 on the Frecciarossa at a base fare of €14.90⁴, on times checked for September 15, 2026. Night Intercity services take 1 hour 56 to 2 hours 50.

The regional fare is fixed and the Frecciarossa fare moves with availability, which makes the slower train the predictable one for a trip built around family timings rather than around departure boards.

What Puglia is on the roots map

Puglia takes 6 times the share of nights from American family visits that it takes from American holiday travel, behind Calabria at 25 times, Abruzzo at 20 and Marche at 10.

At the same time the region recorded 17,894,361⁵ overnight stays in 2024, 3.84%⁵ of the Italian total, which is a substantial tourist economy by southern standards. Puglia is the one place on this list where the roots traveler and the holiday traveler are both present in numbers.

The practical consequence is competition for beds in July and August, and none at all in the months when family visits actually peak.

December, January, and the length of the stay

In 2025, 442,000¹ US travelers came to Italy to see relatives or friends, 7.2% of the total, and they stayed 11.9¹ nights each against 8.7 for holidaymakers, with arrivals concentrated in December and January.

That is the opposite of the Puglian tourist calendar, and it is good news: the coastal towns are quiet, the inland towns are at full population, and the regional trains are not crowded.
