The Florence ZTL: five sectors, one fine

The whole historic center of Florence is a limited traffic zone, split into 5 sectors labelled A, B, O, F and G, so the useful question is which sector you are entering and when, not whether you are inside one.

Sectors A, B and O: the working day rule

In sectors A, B and O the restriction applies all year on working days, 7:30 am to 8:00 pm Monday to Friday and 7:30 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Knowing your sector is the difference between a legal delivery of luggage and a penalty notice six months later. Hotels register a plate against a sector and a band, not against the city.

Some gates are barred 24 hours a day to everything except public transport and emergency vehicles, whatever the hour on the sign next to them.

The summer night zone, with dates that move

A night time zone is added from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, indicatively 11:00 pm to 3:00 am.

Those hours come from a council page referring to an earlier year, and the exact dates are set annually by ordinance. The hours for sectors F and G have not been reconfirmed on a primary source, so treat them as unverified rather than as published fact.

This is one of the few Italian restrictions built around nightlife rather than around monuments, and it catches drivers who assume an empty street is an open one.

How the penalty arrives

Italian art city centers work on one model in 2026: authorized vehicles only, within defined time bands, with cameras at the boundary reading every plate and a penalty issued by post to anyone who passes without a registered permit.

The mechanism has been read directly off the official pages of Rome, Florence, Milan, Naples and Bologna. Bologna is on that list from search results alone, because its own pages are generated in the browser and returned nothing readable.

Renting adds a second charge. The company bills you for handing your details to the city, and that bill tends to arrive before the fine does.

The alternative that removes the problem

Firenze Santa Maria Novella is 1 hour 35 minutes from Roma Termini on the fastest direct high speed train, with 48 direct Frecciarossa services on the weekday sampled in September 2026, and 1 hour 54 minutes from Milano Centrale.

The station sits at the edge of the restricted center and everything inside it is walkable. A car parked in a garage for four days costs more than those two journeys and buys you nothing.
