Five days, three bases: Bologna 2 nights, Parma 1, Modena 2, arranged around producers that made 4.191 million wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano and 6,750,0003 Parma hams in 2025.
The numbers that tell you where to sleep
Parmigiano Reggiano output in 2025 was 4.191 million wheels, up 2.7% on 2024 and equal to roughly 168,0001 tonnes, and it splits across five provinces: Parma 1,391,0001, Reggio Emilia 1,242,0001, Modena 918,0001, Mantova 524,0001, Bologna 115,0001.
Parma and Modena therefore carry the two ends of this trip, and Bologna is the arrival hall. Sleep 2 nights in Bologna, 1 in Parma, 2 in Modena.
Prices on this page are in euros, and dairies keep farm hours, not museum hours.
Getting in: Bologna is the junction, 1 hour 4 minutes from Milan
Milan Centrale to Bologna Centrale takes 1 hour 4 minutes on the fastest direct high speed train, on the timetable in force in September 2026. Bologna is where the Turin to Milan to Naples axis meets the line towards Venice, so nothing in this region is a detour.
Give the first afternoon to the porticoes. Bologna's porticoes were inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2021 as a serial property of 12 groups built from the 12th century onwards, out of more than 62 km of covered walkway in the city.
The 62 km figure is the whole city, not the protected property. It is also the reason a rainy day here costs you nothing.
Day 2: 4.19 million wheels, and why the visit starts at 8 am
A dairy morning is a working morning: the 4.191 million wheels of 2025 were made in daily batches that begin before dawn, and visits fit around milk deliveries rather than around visitors.
The scale is worth carrying in your head before you go in. Parmigiano Reggiano turned over €3.962 billion at consumer prices in 2025, with exports at 50.5%2 of sales and 74,9802 tonnes shipped abroad.
Book direct with the dairy. Consortium members publish their own visit slots and we have no verified central booking line to point you at.
Day 3: Parma, 6,750,000 hams and 126 producers
Parma branded 6,750,000 ha3ms in 2025, worth €8103 million at production and €1.6 billion at consumer prices, from 1263 producing companies. Exports accounted for €315 million.
One night in Parma is enough for a curing house visit and a slow lunch, and the town is small enough to walk end to end. Note that trade releases in 2026 also quote over 7.1 million legs sealed, which counts a different thing from branded hams.
Move to Modena in the afternoon.
Day 4: vinegar at industrial scale, tasting at spoon scale
Balsamic Vinegar of Modena runs at 93 to 95 million liters a year, and more than 93% of that goes abroad to over 1304 countries, on 2025 consortium figures. This is one of the largest food exports in the region and one of the smallest tasting portions.
Acetaie schedule visits privately and most ask a day or two of notice. We have no verified opening hours or prices for individual producers, so treat any timetable you find on a booking platform as unconfirmed.
Day 5: the 48 hour rule at the two Ferrari museums
The Musei Ferrari Pass costs €38 from September to May and €42 from June to August for adults, €12 for under 19s accompanied by family, and the two visits must fall within 48 hours of each other. That constraint decides your last two days, not your interest in cars.
The Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena is a 5,0006 square meter aluminium building wrapped around the house where Enzo Ferrari was born. It opens daily: 9:30 am to 7:00 pm in April, May, September and October, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm from June to August, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm from November to March, closed December 25 and January 1.
The other half of the pass is the Museo Ferrari at Maranello, a separate town about half an hour away by road. Museum visitors can also buy 15 minutes on the Modena circuit for €35.
The prices above come from the Modena tourist board rather than from the operator, whose own pages returned nothing to us. Verify at the ticket desk before you count on the seasonal rate.
