2 hours 55 fastest, 3 hours 15 median, 7 hours 13 slowest, across 46 direct services on a weekday. That last number is not a typo and not a delay: it is a direct train that stops a lot more often, sold alongside the fast ones, at a screen that sorts by price as readily as by time.

The numbers come from a direct query to the Trenitalia booking system for Tuesday, September 8, 2026, counting only solutions without a change. There is no independent confirmation, and Italo's times on the same pair are not verified here.

Which means: read the duration, not the brand

On a 4-hour gap between the best and the worst direct option, sorting a search by price is the expensive move. A 40 euro saving that costs 4 hours is a bad trade on a 9-night trip that already has 3 hotel changes in it.

The practical rule for this leg is to filter by journey time first and price second, then check the arrival station. It is the only Italian route in our set where those two steps change the day.

Area C: 7.50 euro to drive into the middle

Area C is the limited traffic zone of central Milan, inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni. Ordinary vehicles pay 7.50 euro a day, residents 3.00 euro from their 51st entry of the year after registering, service vehicles and garages inside the zone 4.50 euro. It runs Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 7:30 pm (07:30 to 19:30), not on public holidays, with tariffs in force since October 30, 2023.

Pay late and it costs 22.50² euro, with regularization allowed up to midnight on the seventh day after the entry. Electronic gates read the plates, so nothing depends on a warden noticing you.

Area B is a different animal

Area B is the city's low emission zone, far larger than Area C and not a charge at all: it bars the most polluting vehicle classes on a rolling calendar of prohibitions, and the council attributes 65 percent of the city's annual traffic emissions to what it covers. The regional MoVe-In telematic box, which trades a mileage allowance for access, is the alternative route in.

The exact perimeter and hours of Area B are not recoverable from the council's own pages, whose dedicated subpage returns an error. That gap is real and it is why a rental car in Milan is a worse idea than it looks.

Book the Last Supper before you book the train

Every ticket for the Cenacolo Vinciano must be booked, including free entitlements, at 15 euro full and 2 euro for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, free under 18. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 8:15 am to 7:00 pm (08:15 to 19:00), last entry 6:45 pm, closed Monday, January 1 and December 25.
